Auburn leads Samford 27-0-1 all-time. The teams last met on Nov. 22, 2014, with Auburn earning a 31-7 win at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The one tie in the series came on Oct. 29, 1927, with the game ending 9-9 at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field.
Why Bet on Samford?
Samford is an FCS school that plays in the Southern Conference and is 5-6 overall. This is the Bulldogs’ season finale. They haven’t played a Power 5 program since early in the 2018 season with Florida State beat Samford 36-26.
The Bulldogs come off a 31-13 win at Western Carolina last Saturday. Quarterback Liam Welch rushed 20 times for a career-high 105 yards and a touchdown. He also passed for 115 yards and a touchdown. Montrell Washington had one punt return that went for a 59-yard touchdown. Armond Lloyd and Jaleel Laguins had a fumble recovery each for the defense.
Washington was named SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week. With Samford trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, Washington returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown, getting the Bulldogs on the board and swinging moment in the contest. The junior also returned one kick for 21 yards and caught an eight-yard pass to total 88 all-purpose yards on the afternoon. Washington’s punt return for a score was just the second in the league this season.
The win assured Samford of its fourth straight season with at least a .500 league record, tying it with Wofford for the longest active streak. The Bulldogs are currently 2-3 in true road games so far this season.
“Defensively, we played well all night,” Samford head coach Chris Hatcher said. “There were some times that we bent, but we came up with some big stops in the second half. They played awesome and that is the type of defense we’re looking to see. Offensively, we struggled throwing the ball, but we ran the ball extremely well behind our offensive line, and I’m proud of them. And then in special teams, we had a big kick return, and then what really got us going was Montrell’s punt return for a touchdown.”
Samford has scored in its last 213 consecutive games. The last time Samford was shut out in a football game was on Nov. 9, 2000, a 29-0 loss at Tennessee Tech.
Against the current members of the Southeastern Conference, Samford has an all-time record of 2-77-3. This game will mark the seventh time in the last nine seasons Samford has faced an SEC opponent. Its only two wins were one against both Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Why Bet on Auburn?
Kodi Burns, Auburn’s current co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach, got his first full-time coaching position at Samford. Burns coached the Bulldogs’ running backs in 2014.
The Tigers were 21-14 home losers to No. 4 Georgia last week. Auburn scored two touchdowns in the fourth, then had a pair of drives stopped on fourth down in the final minutes. Freshman Bo Nix threw three incompletions and was sacked on the Tigers’ final drive starting from their 27.
Trailing 21-0, Auburn’s comeback began with BNix’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Eli Stove with 10:04 left in the fourth quarter, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive. After a three-and-out by Auburn’s defense, the Tigers struck quickly, driving 57 yards on five plays in 68 seconds. Nix’s 2-yard touchdown run, the first rushing TD allowed by Georgia this season, pulled Auburn within seven points with 7:03 remaining.
Nix completed 30 of 50 passes for 245 yards and touchdown, adding 42 rushing yards on 13 carries and a TD. Nix topped the 2,000-yard passing mark for the season; he now has 2,043 yards on the season, which ranks second among Auburn freshmen all-time, 199 yards shy of the Auburn freshman record (2,242).
Auburn is tied for 24th nationally with 24 rushing TDs this season, just one shy of the Tigers’ total from the entire 2018 season. Auburn is averaging 205.8 rushing yards per game, 26th among FBS schools. Seth Williams made 13 receptions for 121 yards. Williams now has 1,224 career receiving yards, ranking 22nd among Auburn career leaders.
The Auburn defense has allowed only five first-quarter touchdowns this season, one vs. UGA. Auburn has not allowed an SEC opponent to gain 100 yards in the first quarter this season (Georgia 75 yards).
Auburn is 17-10 in November under Gus Malzahn. This is the first time in program history Auburn has closed the regular season with four straight home games.
Auburn is 72-1-1 all-time against current members of the Southern Conference with 36 shutouts in games against Chattanooga, The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Furman, Mercer, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. The Tigers have won 34 straight games against SoCon members since a 19-14 loss to Wofford in 1950. The only other game against a Southern Conference opponent Auburn didn’t win was that 9-9 tie against Samford in 1927.
