With the college football season now underway, it’s easy to look at all the games available for wagering and adopt a scattershot approach by throwing money at as many games as possible and hoping for the best.
That is a way of betting that seldom if ever works, as you cannot expect to win when you are taking chances on games that everyone else is passing on.
My Analysis of NCAAF Sharp Betting Picks Worth A Shot
Sharp bettors take a more analytical approach to making wagers, focusing on the games where they believe they can beat the bookies, even if that means only playing a handful of games from a massive schedule.
We are going to use that approach this week and pick out a few games where we like the spread or the total, so let’s get to it.
^Bowling Green Falcons at Penn State Nittany Lions – OVER 49
9/7, 12:00 PM | Both of these teams opened the season with a win, but Bowling Green will be well aware that their streak is almost certainly going to end at 1, as they prepare to hit the road as a 34 ½ point underdog.
The Nittany Lions had a tricky game to open their season, going on the road to face the West Virginia Mountaineers, who they beat 34-12 in the end.
I think that the Nittany Lions offense will be even more productive this weekend, and they might even hit the total without any help from the Falcons, so I am all about the OVER in this one.
^Texas Longhorns (-7 ½) at Michigan Wolverines
9/7, 12:00 PM | This is arguably the best matchup of the week and is a game that most of us are probably going to be watching for at least a few minutes.
The Longhorns opened their season by dropping 52 points in a convincing win over an admittedly much weaker opponent.
On the flipside, the Wolverines did not look particularly great in a 30-10 win over Fresno, failing to cover in the process.
The Longhorns are gearing up for the gauntlet that is the SEC schedule, and I think they build some early momentum with a big win over the current National Champions.
^Temple Owls at Navy Midshipmen (-13)
9/7, 3:30 PM | This is very much a risky bet, so I totally understand if you are looking at this pick and shaking your head a little.
Going back to last season, these teams are both on a run that has seen them fail to cover the spread in 3 straight games, so one of them has to buck that trend this weekend, and I think it will be Navy that does it.
They won by 28 points in their season opener last weekend, just failing to cover as a 31 ½ point favorite.
This is a much more manageable spread, and it’s one that I think the Midshipmen can cover handily.
^Northern Illinois Huskies at Notre Dame Fighting Irish – OVER 44 ½
9/7, 3:30 PM | The Irish had a tough opening game to start the season, heading into hostile territory to face Texas A&M in a defensive battle that they eventually won by a score of 23-13.
For their home opener, I expect the Irish to come out with guns blazing against a much inferior opponent, running up the score in the process.
The Irish ended last season with 6 straight games going OVER the point total, so let’s take them to start another run with the OVER this weekend.
