Bet The Stanford Cardinal at +1.5 Because…

Stanford Cardinal (12-2 SU, 10-4 ATS) looks like a great bet in this matchup because they have the better defense and likely best player on the field in Christian McCaffery. I know Stanford lost four-year starting quarterback Kevin Hogan and two starting offensive linemen from last season’s12-2 team, but the Cardinal still have Heisman Trophy candidate Christian McCaffery to make plays in the passing, rushing and return games. Maybe it’s me, but I thought McCaffery was the best player in all of college football last season after rushing for an insane 2,019 yards and eight TD’s, catching 45 passes for an additional 546 yards and five scores and amassing a mind-boggling 1,070 yards and one score on kickoff returns. Head coach David Shaw will look to either Keller Chryst or Ryan Burns to replace Hogan, but whoever starts under center will have the luxury of handing the ball off early and often to McCaffery. The Cardinal return six starters from last season’s squad but will need to overcome the loss of gifted linebacker Blake Martinez and another very good linebacker in Kevin Anderson. The good news is that Stanford has a potential star in defensive lineman Solomon Thomas and a nice mix of youth and experience in the secondary to help them stay elite after finishing 32nd in the country in points allowed (22.5 ppg).

Bet The Oregon Ducks at -1.5 Because…

The best two reasons to bet on Oregon (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS) is that they’re playing at home and have been one of the most offensively explosive teams in all of college football for the better part of the past decade. Just like last season, Oregon will turn to an FCS graduate transfer at quarterback t lead them where they want to go in 2016. This coming campaign, head coach Mark Helfrich will hand over the reins to Montana State All-American Dakota Prukop one year after turning over his offense to former Eastern Washington University star Vernon Adams. Prukop passed for over 3,00 yards at Montana State last season with 28 TD passes, but it is his added ability to run the ball that could make the Ducks as dangerous as they were with mobile Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota a couple of seasons ago. Prukop rushed for 1,763 yards and 24 touchdowns the last two seasons and could give Oregon’s opponents nightmares in 2016. The Ducks will have to overcome the losses of three starting offensive linemen, but they have an elite running back in junior Royce Freeman that rushed for a stellar 1,838 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding another 348 yards and two scores on 26 receptions. The receiving corps lost No. 1 wideout Bralon Addison to the NFL, but there is plenty of talent in Eugene to replace him with. Defensively, the Ducks will switch to an aggressive 4-3 defense under new coordinator Brady Hoke in 2016. Oregon have to overcome the loss of gifted defensive end DeForest Buckner and three linebackers with starting experience, but junior end Henry Mondeaux looks like another star in the making for the Ducks. The secondary returns nearly every player from 2015, but improvements are in order after the Ducks gave up an insane 306.5 passing yards per game to finish 126th nationally.

While Oregon recorded a thrilling 38-36 road win over Stanford last season and have won two straight against their Pac-12 rivals, but the Cardinal have won two of the last four meetings overall and are my pick to get the big road win and ATS cover in this contest mostly because they have the better defense and Christian McCaffery. Stanford went 4-2 ATS in their six road games last season and1-0 ATS as an underdog while Oregon went 2-5 ATS at home and 3-6 ATS as a favorite. I like the Cardinal to win another thriller!
