Week 3: Friday, September 12th – Saturday, September 14th, 2024

Betting Week 3 of the College Football Season

Every week there are straight up opportunities in college football that can lead to big time profits.

College Football Week 3 has at least six games where the odds on the underdogs to win SU make them more than playable.

Arizona over Kansas State kicks things off on Friday and then on Saturday, South Carolina hosts LSU as a nice home dog.

Check out college football total odds, analysis, and picks for six of this weekend’s top games.

Writer’s Straight Up Picks for a for Week 3 – Looking for some Wins in Your Future?

Arizona Wildcats +250 at Kansas State Wildcats

The Arizona offense didn’t look great in the 22-10 win versus Northern Arizona, but the defense stepped it up.

NAU scored the TD on a trick play.

So if the offense had done its job, Zona would have covered the spread.

Kansas State struggled in a 7-point victory against Tulane.

Arizona’s offense should easily eclipse the 27 points the Green Wave landed onto Kansas State.

If Zona’s D has improved, Wildcats win this straight up.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: Arizona +250

LSU Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks +218

In two games, South Carolina’s defensive line has absolutely dominated opponents.

The Gamecocks sacked Old Dominion QB Grant Wilson 5 times and picked Wilson off twice.

Then in a surprising blowout win over Kentucky on the road, South Carolina sacked Brock Vandagriff 5 times and picks him off once.

LSU is much better than either ODU or Kentucky but South Carolina plays the Tigers on their field.

Give the Gamecocks a chance to get the SU win.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: South Carolina +218

Washington State Cougars +157 at Washington Huskies

Washington has looked great in wins versus Weber State and Eastern Michigan, which doesn’t impress.

Neither one of those teams has much of a football program.

The Huskies face rival Washington State in the Apple Cup on Saturday.

The game used to happen in both team’s final regular season tilt.

But since the Pac-12 no longer exists, Washington State and Washington, like Oregon versus Oregon State, takes place in College Football Week 3.

In this contest, the team that has the better win on the record are the Cougars.

Washington State handled Texas Tech 37-13 in their last.

In their first game, W. State scored 70 against Portland.

Give Washington State the Apple Cup this NCAAF season.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: Washington State +157

West Virginia Mountaineers at Pittsburgh Panthers +113

West Virginia versus Pittsburgh is often a tight game, which is why backing the home dog makes sense.

Pittsburgh is 2-0 and has already shown grit, beating the Cincinnati Bearcats 28-27 on the road in their last.

On their field, the Panthers will give West Virginia, which has an excellent offense, all the Mountaineers can handle.

Back Pittsburgh to cash.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: Pittsburgh +113

UCF Knights +100 at TCU Horned Frogs

The odds tell us everything we must know.

If the TCU Horned Frogs were the better team in this matchup, Central Florida would be a +130 to +150 moneyline underdog because the game happens at TCU.

UCF quarterback KJ Jefferson transferred from Arkansas where he gave teams like Alabama and Ole Miss fits.

Jefferson should have no trouble dominating a TCU defense that gave up 27 points to a bad Stanford offense in their first game.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: UCF +100

Maryland Terrapins at Virginia Cavaliers +111

It’s difficult to understand why Maryland is the road favorite.

The Terrapins lost their last game at home versus Michigan State, a team that doesn’t have much going for it.

The Cavaliers beat Wake Forest 31-30 on the road.

Anthony Colandrea threw a couple of picks.

Overall, though, Colandrea has been good this season.

He’s thrown 5 TDs and for over 650 yards in 2 games.

Virginia wins.

NCAAF Week 3 SU Pick: Virginia +111

NCAAF Week 3: Thursday, September 14th – Saturday, September 16th, 2023

Army Black Knights at UTSA Roadrunners

SU Odds: Army Black +285
Friday, September 15th, 2023 at 7:00 pm | ESPN
Alamodome, San Antonio, TX

The Black Knights, like every season, averages a lot of rushing yards, 231.5 per game. Army’s rushing attack will have some success versus the Roadrunners D. Beating a quality program like Texas-San Antonio on the road won’t be easy but the Black Knights can pull off the upset.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: Army | Bet Army at UTSA

Louisville Cardinals at Indiana Hoosiers

SU Odds: Indiana +300
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 12:00 pm | BTN
Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN

In 2 games, Indiana is 2-0 against the spread. The Hoosiers held Ohio State to 23 points in their first game, a 23-3 loss. Then in their second, Indiana decimated Indiana State 41-7.

Louisville is better than Indiana State, but the Cardinals gave up 34 to Georgia Tech and this happens on Indiana’s field. The Hoosiers can pull off the upset victory.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: Indiana | Bet Louisville at Indiana

Iowa State Cyclones at Ohio Bobcat

SU Odds: Ohio +136
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 12:00 pm | CBSSN
Peden Stadium, Athens, OH

Ohio lost to San Diego State in their first game. But since then, the Bobcats have won 2 straight. Iowa State is decent, though.

However, the Cyclones don’t possess much more talent than the Bobcats. Almost as important? Ohio has more experience and this happens on the Bobcats’ field.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: Ohio | Bet Iowa State at Ohio

Liberty Flames at Buffalo Bulls

SU Odds: Buffalo Bulls +135
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 12:00 pm | CBSSN
UB Stadium, Buffalo, NY

Everybody is laying the -3.5 on Liberty and why not? The Flames have 2 wins and 2 covers after victories over Bowling Green and New Mexico State.

This happens in Buffalo, though. Also, the Bulls are easily the best team Liberty has faced so far this season. The Bulls are 0-2 after losing to Fordham as a -22 chalk. Buffalo bounces back in a big way versus Liberty.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: Buffalo | Bet Liberty at Buffalo
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Minnesota Golden Gophers at North Carolina Tar Heels

SU Odds: Minnesota Golden +242
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 3:30 pm | ESPN
Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC

Minnesota is 0-2 ATS but the Gophers are 2-0 SU. The reason Minnesota can beat North Carolina is because the Gophers defense is playing lights out.

Minnesota gave up 10 to Nebraska in their first game and 6 to Eastern Michigan in their second. UNC heads into this after another barn burner victory versus App State. Minnesota contains Drake Maye and picks up an out of conference victory.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: Minnesota | Bet Minnesota at North Carolina
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

James Madison Dukes at Troy Trojans

SU Odds: James Madison +126
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 7:00 pm | NFL NET
Veterans Memorial Stadium, Troy, AL

This should be a close game. Troy is a good football team. But James Madison beat the Virginia Cavaliers last Saturday and the Dukes have gotten votes to rank in the Top 25. So at the odds, +126 on JM, the Dukes are worth taking a shot.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: James Madison | Bet James Madison at Troy
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Vanderbilt Commodores at UNLV Rebels

SU Odds: UNLV +155
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 7:00 pm | CBSSN
Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, NV

Vanderbilt plays in the SEC, which is why they’re the favorites over UNLV even though this happens in Vegas. The Commodores are 2-1 SU, another reason some believe Vandy gets the win.

The Rebels lost their last versus Michigan but won against the spread. UNLV might be the better team and since this is a Rebels’ home game, the money line odds make UNLV an overlay.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: UNLV | Bet Vanderbilt at UNLV
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

South Alabama Jaguars at Oklahoma State Cowboys

SU Odds: South Alabama +232
Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 7:00 pm | BIG12|ESPN+
Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater, OK

Most college football handicappers are backing the Cowboys to cover. That could be because not many know about South Alabama.

The Jaguars’ first game loss came against Tulane. Michael Pratt, the Green Wave’s excellent quarterback played. So losing to Tulane makes sense. South Bama will be a tough team for the Cowboys to beat. Give the Jaguars a real shot at the upset.

College Football Week 3 SU Pick: South Alabama | Bet South Alabama at Oklahoma State

2022 NCAAF Betting Predictions: Teams to Straight-Up Win their Week 3 Match

Previous Betting News

After a Week 2 that saw numerous upsets, crazy endings, and a huge firing, the oddsmakers have had their hands full in setting the lines for Week 3. The early lines are out, and after looking things over, we’ve found a couple of games that we’re pretty confident in. We think we’ve found two sure winners for you. Let’s take a look at those two games, and we’ll give you our picks so you can place your bets against their NCAA Football Odds.

Sure Winners For Week 3 of the 2022 Season | College Football Betting Picks

Oklahoma Sooners @ Nebraska Cornhuskers (+15)

These two renewed their Big 12 rivalry last season, and the game was closer than expected. But since then, both teams have undergone a lot of changes. Let’s start with Oklahoma. Lincoln Riley left for USC, and took a lot of Oklahoma’s top players with him, or they entered the transfer portal. Brent Venables, who was Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator the last time they played in Lincoln, is now the head coach at Oklahoma.

After two terrible losses, including Saturday’s loss to Georgia Southern at home, Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts made the decision to fire head coach Scott Frost. Frost’s tenure at Nebraska was marred by bad losses and bad decisions. Interim coach Mickey Joseph, a former Husker quarterback, now has the envious task of taking on the Sooners.

Oklahoma got off to a slow start last week, but went on to defeat Kent State by a score of 33-3. Venables defense held the Golden Flash to a lone field goal. Sooner quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for nearly 300 yards with three touchdowns. Star receiver Marvin Mims had over 160 yards and two touchdowns.

While we think the Cornhuskers will come out and play with passion early on, we don’t think that they can keep it up throughout the whole game. Oklahoma is the more talented team, and it will show at the end. The Sooners will pull away late and will leave Lincoln with a 21-point victory.

California Golden Bears @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-13)

Who would’ve thought that coming into this game, the Cal Golden Bears would be 2-0, and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame would be 0-2. After last week’s stunning upset by Marshall in South Bend, Marcus Freeman’s squad has started the season off winless. Notre Dame will welcome Cal to town on Saturday, hoping for their first victory of the season.

Cal has beaten UC-Davis and UNLV, so they haven’t really played anyone as of yet. Cal knows that this is their chance to make a name for themselves if they can beat Notre Dame. Prior to Saturday’s loss, Notre Dame had won 30 of their last 31 home games.

Even though Notre Dame lost to Marshall, we look for them to rebound and beat Cal on Saturday. This has already been a learning experience for the Irish, and we think that they’ll come out inspired and will take it to Cal. Notre Dame wins 31-14, covering the spread, and winning their first game.

2021 NCAAF Season Week 3 SU Betting Picks to Wager On

Previous Betting News

We are only 2 weeks in, but it already looks as though we are in for a fun season of college football. The upsets have been coming thick and fast, which is very good news for bettors who like to take a little gamble on the underdogs. We are off to a flying start with our weekly SU picks for the season, going a perfect 6-0 through the opening 2 weeks. Keep in mind that we tend to go with games that the bookies see as close as opposed to one-sided affairs, so if you have been playing these SU picks in parlays, you should have a decent little profit going at the moment. We are now going to look ahead to Week 3 and make our SU picks for this week. The games that we pick will be those that currently have a team favored to win by 7 points or less, which helps with the NCAAF odds, so let’s get right to it.

College Football SU Picks for Week 3

Virginia Tech Hokies over West Virginia Mountaineers

Let’s get the ball rolling this week by jumping in and taking an underdog right off the bat. The Hokies go on the road with a 2-0 record, which included a surprise win over UNC in the opening week of the season. The Mountaineers bounced back from a loss in Week 1, dropping 66 points on LIU in an expected rout. This is a matchup where the Virginia Tech Hokies have had some real success in recent years, winning 7 of the last 9 meetings with West Virginia.

That is no guarantee of success, though, as they will be facing a West Virginia team that is on a 6-game winning streak in their own building. Still, I am taking a shot and going with the Hokies to win.

Minnesota Golden Gophers over Colorado Buffaloes

Let’s continue with the slight underdog trend for our next pick. The 1-1 Minnesota Golden Gophers go on on the road to Colorado as a 2-point underdog in Week 3. It is worth pointing out that their lone loss this season came at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 1. They gave the Buckeyes all they could handle in a 45-31 loss. One of the things that has me leaning towards the Golden Gophers this weekend is that they have been a very good bet away from home, winning 7 of their last 10 on the road. They have also covered in 10 of their last 15 road games as an underdog, and with the spread on the shorter side, covering here might well mean a win.

Mississippi State Bulldogs over Memphis Tigers

We close out this week’s SU picks by taking a road favorite, with the Mississippi State Bulldogs heading to Memphis favored by 3. Both teams are off to winning starts and come into Week 3 sporting a 2-0 record. It is the Bulldogs, though, who have dominated this matchup, coming into this weekend having won each of their last 10 meetings versus the Memphis Tigers. That includes beating them 5 straight times in Memphis. Overall, they have won just 1 of their last 8 games on the road, but I think they break out of that slump with a win in this one.

College Football Betting News

2019 College Football Week 3 SU Betting Picks

Previous Betting News

In sports, winning is everything. The truth of the matter is that winning means even more in college football, as a single loss can often be enough to derail a season and make a National Championship nothing short of impossible. It is, of course, possible to drop a game and still make the playoffs, but that very often means hoping that other teams slip up.

So far, the big guns have all escaped defeat, although Michigan have already had a couple of scares. We are going to look ahead to Week 3 of the season to see if we can pick out some SU winners from what is a very busy NCAAF Betting schedule.

2019 College Football Week 3 SU Betting Picks

North Carolina Tar Heels over Wake Forest Demon Deacons

I was going to go with this Friday night game in my ATS picks, but I have decided to roll the dice a little and go with it as a straight up pick. It was a terrible season for UNC in 2018, so much so that they decided to clean house and lure old coach Mac Brown out of retirement.

With wins over South Carolina and Miami to start the season, the move by the Tar Heels looks like an inspired one. Both of their wins have been in tight games, which I think is what we will get here. I am going to take the Tar Heels to win on the road as a slight underdog.

USC Trojans over BYU Cougars

I am always a little wary about taking the road team straight up in a game where the point spread is rather tight, but it now looks as though I am going to have two of them already this week.

The USC Trojans have opened their 2019 college football campaign with a pair of wins, and while they struggled a little in the opening week against Fresno, they looked much more composed in Week 2 versus Stanford. BYU had a big win over Tennessee in OT last weekend, but that was against a Vols team that looks very poor this year. I like USC to win and move to 3-0.

Iowa Hawkeyes over Iowa State Cyclones

Many of the big rivalry games comes later in the season, so it’s always fun to have one on the schedule in the early going. We have a good one set to roll this weekend, with the Iowa Hawkeyes set to go on the road to face the Iowa State Cyclones. It has been Iowa who have had the best of this meeting in recent years, winning 7 of the last 10.

That record includes winning 4 of their last 5 against the Cyclones on the road, which would appear to make them a very good bet again this weekend, especially given how good they have been defensively through the opening 2 weeks.

Florida Gators over Kentucky Wildcats

One of the big questions heading into this season was whether anyone was going to be able to seriously challenge the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC East. The Florida Gators and the Kentucky Wildcats have emerged as the early favorites to do so, but one of them is going to lose ground this weekend.

The Gators barely survived their opener against a very weak Miami team and will need to avoid the turnovers that almost did them in there. The Wildcats do not look as good as they did last season, but they are still 2-0. I think the Gators win this one going away.

Previous Betting News

If you like making simple moneyline wagers and you’re looking for some value-packed NCAA football betting lines with the third Week of college football action quickly approaching, then you’re about to be treated to a trio of expert picks that are all offering a bunch of value as straight-up (SU) selections for various reasons. Let’s get started with one Pac-12 playoff hopeful looking to get it done on the road in College Football Week 3 Pick.

College Football Week 3 SU Picks and Winning Predictions

UCLA Bruins (2-0) at Memphis Tigers (1-0)

When: Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 12:00 PM ET
Where: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
TV: ABC
NCAAF Odds: Memphis +3 / Total: OFF.

Analysis: The UCLA Bruins laid a huge 56-23 smackdown on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Week 2 as gifted quarterback Josh Rosen completed a blistering 22 of 25 passes for 329 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Through two games, Rosen is completing a blistering 67.9 percent of his passes for 820 yards with a whopping nine touchdowns and zero interceptions. Wide receiver Darren Andrews caught four passes for 92 yards and three touchdowns in the win while linebacker Adarius Pickett recorded a whopping 15 tackles in the win.

Memphis was off in Week 2 with their game against Central Florida canceled because of Hurricane Irma. The Tigers got past the UL-Monroe Warhawks 37-29 in their regular season opener although quarterback Riley Ferguson was pretty ‘ugly’ in completing just 10 of 25 passes for 87 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Running back Darrell Henderson carried the Tigers to victory by rushing for 169 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries while fellow running back Patrick Taylor Jr. added 131 rushing yards and one score on 15 carries.

Forget the point spread surrounding this Week 3 matchup, UCLA will get the outright road win against a Memphis team they have far more talent than on both sides of the ball. Josh Rosen is playing out of his mind right now and the bruins have some high hopes for a Pac-12 title at the very least.

College Football Week 3 Pick: UCLA 42 Memphis 24

Texas at No. 4 USC

When: Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 8:30 PM ET
Where: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California
TV: FOX
NCAAF Odds: USC -17.

Analysis: Texas bounced back from its humbling 51-41 Week 1 loss against Maryland to beat the hell out of San Jose State 56-0 in Week 2. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger completed 15 of 27 passes for 22 yards and one touchdown while running back Chris warren III added a team-high 166 rushing yards and two scores on 16 carries.

While the Longhorns were impressive in their Week 2 win,it is the rank 4th USC Trojans that are the easy pick to win outright in Week 2 after man-handling No. 19 Stanford in its 42-24 win on Saturday.

Heisman trophy favorite Sam Darnold completed 21 of 26 passes for 316 yards with four TD passes but tossed two interceptions in the win to raise his season total to four after just two games. Running back Ronald Jones rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and has carried the Trojans early on while Darnold has struggled for stretches.

USC has a huge edge at quarterback and has more overall elite talent on their roster than Texas at this point, which is why they’re the easy pick to win outright at home, even if they don;t cover the big spread as 17-point favorites.

While I’m expecting Tom Herman to put his Longhorns back on the national map at some point in the near future, that future is not now. USC wins to remain unbeaten and keep their national championship hopes alive.

College Football Week 3 Pick: USC 35 Texas 24

Air Force at No. 7 Michigan

When: Saturday, September 16, 2017 AT 12:00 PM ET
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan
TV: BTNM
NCAAF Odds: Michigan -26.

Analysis: The Air Force Falcons laid an emphatic 62-0 beatdown on VMI in their regular season opener win two weeks ago as quarterback Arion Worthman completed 8 of 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns and the Air Force defense limited VMI to a paltry 40 passing yards in the win.

Still, I wouldn’t expect the falcons to really challenge seventh0ranked Michigan for the outright win seeing as how the Wolverines not only laid their own 36-14 smackdown on Cincinnati in Week 2, but have far more elite talent than the Falcons in this Week 3 matchup.

While I’m not real impressed with Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight right now, head coach Jim Harbaugh does have an elite running back in Ty Isaac and another elite defense that will keep opponents off the scoreboard more often than not.

I know the Falcons have won seven straight games dating back to last season, but Michigan is simply has too much talent on both sides of the ball, plus a bunch of motivation to avoid losing to teams they shouldn’t.

While I think it’s more than possible that Air Force covers the spread as near, three-touchdown underdogs, there’s no way the falcons record the outright road upset over the playoff hopeful Wolverines.

College Football Week 3 Pick: Michigan 31 Air force 20

Here’s a Closer Look at the Top College Football Week 3 SU Betting Picks

South Florida at Syracuse (-12.5)

USF (2-0) has been playing great since about midway through last season and comes off a 48-17 rout of Northern Illinois. Quinton Flowers threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns. With two-time American Athletic Conference rushing leader Marlon Mack sitting out after spending the past week in the concussion protocol, Flowers accounted for 403 of his team’s 658 yards total offense. The Bulls have won nine of 11 games dating to last season, improving to 2-0 for the first time since 2012. USF’s up-tempo attack has zoomed to the end zone 14 times and smashed the school record with 104 points through two games of the season. The Bulls currently rank 10th in the FBS in scoring offense with 52 points per outing while compiling 551 yards per game. Syracuse (1-1) was bombed 62-28 by Louisville on Friday. The Cardinals set a school record and came within 13 yards of the ACC record with 845 yards offensively. It was the most ever allowed by Syracuse, eclipsing the mark of 654 by West Virginia in 1993. Eric Dungey was 25-for- 51 for 255 yards passing and scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter for the Orange. Syracuse lost 45-24 at USF last year and I expect a similar score.

Boston College at Virginia Tech (-5.5)

I’m surprised this line isn’t higher. Boston College (1-1) comes off a 26-7 win over UMass. Patrick Towles hit former quarterback Jeff Smith on back-to- back, one-play TD drives, and substitute Mike Knoll connected on a pair of field goals for BC’s first win in 10 games. The Eagles trailed 7-0 and had just 55 total yards in the opening quarter. Virginia Tech (1-1) lost 45-24at Bristol Motor Speedway to No. 17 Tennessee. Virginia Tech outscored Tennessee 14-0 and outgained the Vols 204-28 in the first quarter. Tennessee responded by scoring 31 straight points, including 24 in the second period. Virginia Tech’s Travon McMillian rushed 14 times for 127 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown. Two games into 2016, the Hokies already have a season’s worth of fumbles, losing nine, a record in back-to- back games according to data available from the last 30 seasons. Only Duke, which has lost seven, is close. All other 126 teams in the FBS have lost four or fewer. Tech won at Boston College 26-10 last year.

New Mexico State at Kentucky (-18.5)

If the Wildcats somehow lose this game, then Coach Mark Stoops will be fired immediately; he’s going to be a goner after the season now. UK (0-2) lost 45-7 at Florida on Saturday in an uninspired effort, the Cats’ 30th straight loss in the series, the longest current losing streak in major college football between two teams that play annually. After allowing 34 unanswered points in a 44-35 loss to Southern Miss in Week 1, the Wildcats were outscored 79-0 in six quarters before finding the end zone late against Florida’s backups. Florida’s offense gained 564 yards while holding the Kentucky offense to just 149 yards. UK quarterback Drew Barker, fifth nationally in pass efficiency after week one, completed just two of 10 passes for 10 yards with three interceptions. New Mexico State (1-1) comes off a 32-31 win over New Mexico. Tyler Rogers threw a scoring pass to Gregory Hogan late in the fourth quarter. Rogers and Hogan connected from eight yards for the win — the first over UNM at home since 2010 — with 5:46 to play after the Aggies had trailed throughout the game. MNSU again played without its best player in running back Larry Rose II. He’s recovering from sports hernia surgery.
