Super Early College Football Playoffs Predictions

You will have to take my word for it, but this time last year my four predicted teams for the College Football Playoff were Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma. I was correct on the Tide, Tigers and Sooners but OSU was my national title pick so I missed that. Let’s take a gander at my four projected teams for this season’s playoff in no particular order and with their college football odds to win it all. I wrote another story here at Mybookie.ag saying that I believed the Pac-12 would miss out for a second year in a row so you won’t see one of those teams in this list.

LSU Tigers (+1200)

I pretty much have to take the SEC champion to make the College Football Playoff because it’s the best conference in the country by far. And the SEC West is the toughest division by far. I believe that LSU beats out Alabama to win the West and then takes out Tennessee in the SEC title game to reach the playoff behind running back and Heisman contender Leonard Fournette. if LSU doesn’t have a big season, head coach Les Miles seems likely to be fired. On Nov. 27, 2015, things looked pretty bleak for Miles. LSU was in the midst of a three-game losing streak that turned a 7-0 start into 7-3. There were reports that LSU booster were ready to buyout his huge contract. But LSU closed the regular season with a 19-7 win over Texas A&M and then stomped Texas Tech 56-27 in the bowl game to give Miles some momentum. Might he have still been fired if Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was ready to take the job? Maybe. LSU’s schedule is about as favorable as possible this season as both Ole Miss and Alabama have to visit Baton Rouge. The Tigers to have tough trips to Auburn, Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M. They can probably afford to lose one of those games as long as they beat the Tide and Rebels.

Florida State Seminoles (+1400)

When’s the last time you heard of a top team returning potentially every single starter on offense. That’s what FSU is doing, led by running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Dalvin Cook. He averaged 7.4 yards per carry last season en route to 1,691 rushing yards and also had 244 yards receiving. Florida State has a veteran offensive line (74 career starts), which is a nice group to run behind. The Noles could lose to Ole Miss in the opener in Orlando, but there wouldn’t be any margin for error the rest of the way. More important is the ACC opener against Louisville on the road following a scrimmage against Charleston Southern. Five of the last eight games are in Tallahassee, while only one of the first four is at home. Make it to October unscathed and the tone will be set. The ACC game of the year is against Clemson in Tallahassee on Oct. 29. The winner of that should win the ACC title and get a playoff spot.

The other two spots TBA

Yep, I’m taking the chicken way out. I’m not ready to name my other playoff teams until some important position battles are decided. For example, the quarterback winner for Notre Dame (+1800). I do believe the Irish will get into the playoff if they only lose one game because of their tough schedule and because, well they are Notre Dame. That would leave either the Big Ten or Big 12 champion as the fourth team. At this moment, I’d lean Oklahoma (+1400) as the fourth club.
