Syracuse Orange 2023 College Football Season Betting Guide

Syracuse Orange 2023 College Football Season Betting Guide

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers entered the 2022 season on a hot seat and didn’t really get off it but did at least avoid being fired for one more year thanks to a 7-6 mark. The team started 6-0, including a knocking off No. 15 NC State, before losing five straight. SU then beat Boston College 32-23 in the regular-season finale and earned a date with Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Gophers won that 28-20. Let’s examine the 2023 Syracuse football team.

Let’s break down Syracuse this year. Here’s the preview for your college football betting odds to win the NCAA National Championship.

Syracuse Regular-season wins: 6.5

The only reason Babers is still Syracuse’s coach is probably because the school is too cheap to fire him. The school has posted only three winning seasons since joining the league in 2013. Babers has delivered a few highlights since taking over in ’16, including a 10-3 mark in 2018 and a 7-6 finish last year after three consecutive losing records (2019-21). However, even with those high points, Babers is only 36-49 overall and 19-39 in conference play.

Babers lost both coordinators off last year’s team as OC Robert Anae left for NC State and Tony White for Nebraska – no one wants to work for a coach close to getting fired. White had served three seasons as Babers’ DC, installing the 3-3-5 defensive scheme that has transformed the Orange defense into one of the best in the ACC. White was a nominee for the Broyles Award last season, which honors the best assistant coaches in the country. Anae had been at SU just one year.

SU’s offense will have a new primary back as Sean Tucker is now in the NFL. He was named second-team all-ACC after rushing 1,060 yards, the 12th-highest total in program history, in 2022. He was the first running back to have back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons since Walter Reyes (2002 and 2003). Tucker had 11 rushing scores and also caught 36 passes for 254 yards and two scores. Now it’s up to sophomore LeQuint Allen to take over and be more of a workhorse after averaging 6.7 yards per carry last year behind Tucker.

QB Garrett Shrader is Back

Shrader started 12 games in 2023, missing one due to injury, and completed 205-of-317 passes (64.7 pct) for 2,640 yards with 17 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions. He ran for 453 yards on 150 attempts and nine scores. Shrader’s His .647 completion percentage was  second in the ACC and 33rd nationally this season, it was the third most accurate season in program history.

Shrader wasn’t able to participate in spring practice after undergoing a successful procedure on his right arm. The Orange have four other quarterbacks rostered currently: Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, JaCobian Morgan, Justin Lamson and Luke MacPhail. Del Rio-Wilson was the only one among them to see the field in 2022. He appeared in seven games, completing 27 of 51 pass attempts for 342 yards and one touchdown. He had two interceptions.

Oronde Gadsden II top tight end of the League

Oronde Gadsden II is one of the nation’s top tight ends and was first-team All-ACC last year. He caught 61 passes for 969 yards and six touchdowns in 2022, leading all tight ends nationally in receiving yardage. When Gadsden gained at least 100 receiving yards, the Orange went 4-0. When he didn’t, they were 3-6. He’s a difference-maker. His 969 receiving yards was the seventh-most in a season in Syracuse history and his 61 catches were the most by an Orange sophomore in program history, passing Mike Williams (60/2007). It is also Syracuse’s single-season record for receptions by a tight end, passing Nick Provo (51/2011).

Marlow Wax Leads the Defense

The defense is led by linebacker Marlow Wax, who was voted as a team captain for 2023, was an honorable mention All-ACC selection last season. He started all 13 games, making him the only member of the team’s linebacking corps to appear in every game on defense. He finished the year with a team-best 91 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss on the season. His 91 tackles ranked 11th in the ACC last season. He also had 4.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a blocked kick. Wax anchored a defensive unit that finished in the season 14th nationally in passing defense (184.8) and 21st in total defense (328.6)

Starting the FCS Football Season

Syracuse opens the season on Sept. 2 with a cupcake opponent in FCS school Colgate so that’s a win. So should be Sept. 9 at home vs. Western Michigan. The first big test will be Sept. 16 at Purdue. For all of Syracuse’s historic success, the Orange have managed just two national Top-10 finishes in the past 30 years. They aren’t getting one this year, either, We think the Orange go 3-1 out of conference and 4-4 in the ACC, good for another 7-5 mark.

Expert Prediction: Syracuse finishes 7-6 – over 6.5 wins
