Bowl games are set up to be played in neutral venues, but there are times when a team gets a bit of an edge by getting a game that is close to home. We will be seeing that in the playoffs this season, with the Georgia Bulldogs set to face the Ohio State Buckeyes in Atlanta. The question here is whether that translates to any sort of home field advantage or not. Another game that delivers a similar situation is the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, which will be in Charlotte, North Carolina on December 30. The NC State Wolfpack may be considered to have home field advantage to a certain extent, but they are still in as a modest underdog for this one. The Maryland Terrapins were favored by a single point, but it has now swung the other way. Can they come away with the win? Let’s take a closer look at the NCAA Football Bowl props, cons and prediction.
Duke’s Mayo Bowl: Maryland is Slight Underdog, can they win the Bowl?
The Pros for the Maryland Terrapins
At first glance, you might consider that a 7-5 season for the Terrapins was somewhat mediocre, but it was probably not as bad as you might think. Of the 5 games that they lost, 3 came at the hands of ranked opponents, including Michigan and Ohio State, both of whom will be in the playoffs this weekend. They were actually quite competitive against Michigan, keeping it to within a TD when all was said and done.
The Terrapins were in as a 1-point favorite earlier in the week, but as we mentioned earlier, things have now swung the other way and they are now a 1-point underdog. In games that they started as a dog this season, the Terrapins went 2-2, which included that game against the Wolverines that we already discussed. If they can play as well as they did in that one, then we might well be looking at them winning this game. The problem here is that there are some things that have us leaning the other way, so let’s now take a look at some of those potential cons.
The Cons for the Maryland Terrapins
Maryland played 3 games against ranked opponents this season and lost them all. NC State finished the season at #23 in the National Rankings, so are we about to see the Terrapins losing trend against ranked opponents continue? Coming down the stretch, the Terrapins went just 2-5 ATS and are also just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games played in the month of December. They were 12-1 SU in their last 13 as a favorite, but as they are now considered the underdog, can we use that positive trend as a reason to put money on Maryland?
Will the Maryland Terrapins Win?
As the spread suggests, this looks like a game that could go either way. When Maryland and NC State were in the ACC, they played a lot, with the wins and losses basically split right down the middle, which makes the current point spread make even more sense. In short, this looks like a game between a pair of evenly matched teams, but that being said, I am leaning toward NC State to come away with the win on Friday afternoon.
