Why Bet on Texas Tech?

The Red Raiders were upset 31-13 at Iowa State last week and they are starting their usual late-season fade. ISU held the Red Raiders (4-3, 1-3) to 336 yards, well below Tech’s six-game average of 543 yards. Nic Shimonek completed 31 of 40 passes for 207 yards with an interception. The Red Raiders ran the ball 41 times for 129 yards, which is unusual for that pass-happy team. “It was more the looks we were getting,” Coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “We felt like we could execute the run at a high level, and we didn’t. Turned the ball over a couple of times got us off schedule.” The Texas Tech defense is coming off a solid performance, though as the Red Raiders essentially shut out the Cyclones during the second half. Iowa State’s only touchdown during the final 30 minutes came on a 61-yard interception return. The Cyclones scored 10 of its points on drives that started on the Tech side of the field. Texas Tech remains among the national leaders in turnover margin this week as the Red Raiders rank 15th nationally and second in the Big 12 in the category at plus-7 on the season. Tech also ranks 12th in the country with 16 forced turnovers (9 interceptions, 7 fumbles). Opponents are currently averaging 134.9 rushing yards per game this season, a drastic improvement on a year ago where Texas Tech was giving up over 100 yards more per game on the ground (238.6 yards per game). The Red Raiders currently rank 37th nationally in rushing defense up from 116th a year ago. Tech has not finished in the top 50 of the category since 2009.

Why Bet on Oklahoma?

The Sooners (6-1) won at Kansas State 42-35 last week.  Rodney Anderson ran 22 yards for the go-ahead score with seven seconds left, and Mayfield threw for 410 yards and accounted for four touchdowns. Anderson finished with 147 yards rushing for the Sooners, who trailed 21-10 at the break. The last time OU trailed by double-digits at halftime and won was a 31-24 double-overtime victory at Tennessee in 2015 (trailed 17-3 at half). After giving up 316 yards in the first half (9.6 yards per play), the Sooners allowed 96 yards in the second half (4.2 per play). Additionally, the Wildcats rushed for 256 yards on 24 carries in the first half (10.7 average) but just 12 yards on 18 carries after halftime (0.7 per carry). Are the Sooners a safe bet in Week 9? It was the Sooners’ nation-leading 14th consecutive true road victory, and it extended their run of dominance in Manhattan. They haven’t lost to the Wildcats in their home stadium since 1996. Mayfield has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 33 straight games, or every game of his OU career, to extend his own school record and the longest active streak in FBS. He’s also thrown at least two TD passes in 20 consecutive games (59 TDs to 10 INTs during the stretch), extending his own Big 12 record. His 479 yards of total offense gave him 13,269 for his career and passing Missouri’s Brad Smith (13,088) for fifth in Big 12 history.
