Winners
Indiana (-10)
Sure, the Hoosiers were the beneficiaries of a huge blown call that gave them a thrilling 36-35 overtime win over Penn State in its opener, but make no mistake about it, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is very, very good, even if he doesn’t get the same amount of national publicity as some other quarterbacks. No matter the case, Indiana was definitely a huge winner this past weekend.
No. 6 Oklahoma State (4-0)
Oklahoma State improved to 4-0 on the season by taking down No. 22 Iowa State on Saturday and that makes the Cowboys winners heading into Week 10. Oklahoma State is the only unbeaten team in the Big 12 and they have the look of a legitimate national championship contender. The Cowboys have a superstar running back in Chuba Hubbard and a defense that ranks eighth nationally in points allowed (12.0 ppg).
No. 11 BYU (6-0)
The Independent Cougars might not have taken down a nationally ranked title contender as of yet this season, but BYU is off to a fantastic 6-0 start while recording impressive wins over Navy and Houston. The Cougars are ranked a stellar seventh in scoring (45.0 ppg) while also being elite on the defensive side of the ball by limiting the opposition to just 14.0 points per game. BYU has a huge Week 10 road date against No. 25 Boise State.
Rutgers (1-0)
Rutgers might be just 1-0 on the season, but the Scarlet Knights were big winners last weekend as they stunned Michigan State 38-27 to get the huge road win. Rutgers forced six fumbles and recovered five in the win while limiting the Spartans to just 50 rushing yards in the win. Running back Isaih Pacheco is a dual-threat weapon.
Losers
No. 17 Penn State (0-1)
Sure, the Nittany Lions got robbed in their 36-35 overtime loss against Indiana last weekend, but the fact of the matter is that Penn State probably should have put their Big Ten rivals away long before their stunning OT finish. Ranked seventh nationally prior to their season-opener, Penn State is now down to 17th in the national rankings with mighty Ohio State coming to town in Week 10.
No. 9 Wisconsin (1-0)
While the Badgers beat the hell out of Illinois 45-7 as freshman quarterback Graham Mertz passed for 248 yards with five TD passes and no picks, Wisconsin enters the new week as ‘losers’ simply because they will be without Mertz for the next couple of weeks because of his positive COVID-19 test result. For a team in need of a competent quarterback, the loss of their talented freshman makes the Badgers losers for at least a week.
