Top Picks For College Football Weekend Highlight Five Week 2 Matchups

Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee

When: September 10, 2016, 08:00
Where: Bristol Motor Speedway
TV: ABC
NCAAF Odds: Tennessee -9 / Total: 54

Analysis:
Hokies quarterback Jerod Evans threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns to lead Virginia Tech to a commanding 36-13 season-opening victory over Liberty on Saturday, in head coach Justin Fuente’s debut. Running back Jalen Hurd recovered quarterback Joshua Dobbs’ overtime fumble in the end zone to lift No. 9 Tennessee to a narrow 20-13 victory over Appalachian State on Thursday night after rallying back from a 10-point halftime deficit.

I love the coaching style and offensive genius of Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente and I just don’t see the Hokies losing to a Tennessee tem that looked extremely shaky in its Week 1 opener against Appalachian State. While Tennessee has gone 6-3 ATS over its last nine games, I believe the spread for this matchup should be closer to 3-6 points, making Virginia Tech the pick to cover the spread in a narrow loss.

My Pick: Virginia Tech 31 Tennessee 28

Tulsa vs. No. 5 Ohio State

When: September 10, 2016, 3:30 PM ET
Where: Ohio Stadium
TV: ABC
NCAAF Odds: Ohio State -28.5 / Total: 67.5

Analysis:
While Tulsa has gone 4-1 ATS in their last five games and a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five road games, I’m going to urge you to back the Ohio State Buckeyes to get the win and ATS cover.

The Buckeyes have won 15 of their last 16 home games while going 4-1 ATS in their last five games. With Tulsa going 3-10 SU in their last 13 road games, things don’t bode well for the Golden Hurricanes in this contest. Ohio State wins going away to cover the college football betting line.

My Pick: Ohio State 56 Tulsa 21

South Carolina at Mississippi State

When: September 10, 2016, 7:00
Where: Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field
TV: ESPN2
NCAAF Odds: Mississippi State -9.5 / Total:  47

Analysis:
I have no idea why Mississippi State is a nearly double-digit favorite, but I don’t like the Bulldogs to cover the spread! First and foremost, I expect South Carolina to play stupendous defense under Will Muschamp this season. Secondly, South Carolina has as much – if not more – talent on their roster as Mississippi State.

South Carolina is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games and has won seven straight games against Mississippi State though the two teams have not met since 2013. The Gamecocks cover the spread in a thriller.

My Pick: South Carolina 28 Mississippi State 27

Penn State at Pittsburgh

When: September 10, 2016, 12:00
Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA
TV: ESPN
NCAAF Odds: Pittsburgh -4.5 / Total: 51

Analysis:
I like Pittsburgh’s defense, but I’m also impressed with the new offense Penn State is using this season and I believe the Nittany Lions are the pick to cover the spread in a contest that looks like a classic field goal finish to me.

I know the Nittany Lions are just 1-4 ATS in their last five games and 0-5 ATS in their last five road games, but Pittsburgh is just 2-6 ATS in its last eight games and an uninspiring 1-6 ATS in its last seven home games. Penn State has the best quarterback and running back in this matchup and will cover the spread against the Panthers at the very least!

My Pick: Pittsburgh 28 Penn State 27

Iowa State vs. Iowa

When: September 10, 2016 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: Kinnick Stadium
TV: BTN
NCAAF Odds: Iowa -18 / Total: 53.5

Analysis:
While I’m not real fond of the point spread surrounding this contest – and Iowa ruined my pick for them to cover in Week 1 – I am coming back with another pick for the Hawkeyes to narrowly cover the spread against an offensively-challenged Iowa State squad.

Iowa may be just 1-4-1 ATS in its last 6 games, but the Iowa State Cyclones have gone 2-6 ATS in its last eight road games and that just doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence in me. Iowa State has lost five straight games dating back to last season while Iowa has won 13 of its last 15 games overall. It’s going to be close, but I like Iowa to get the win and ATS cover!

My Pick: Iowa 35 Iowa State 14
