A combination of conference matchups and important interconference games are on the slate for Week 3 in college football. After one highly ranked team went down to defeat and two others barely escaped with victories in Week 2, there could be some key results that will have an impact on potential College Football Playoff (CFP) contenders. It’s time we take a look at the must watch matches from week 3 so you can start getting ready to bet against the NCAAF odds.
Expert Predictions for College Football Week 3
(1) Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0) (-15.5) @ (11) Florida Gators (2-0) (over/under 56)
It’s tough to know just how good Alabama is after a pair of 30+ point wins over Miami and Mercer to open the season. Miami squeaked past Appalachian State following their loss to the Crimson Tide and Mercer hails from the FCS. Florida has also had a couple of lopsided wins, but also against unimpressive opponents.
Prediction: Alabama 38 Florida 21
Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-1) @ (3) Oklahoma Sooners (2-0) (-22.0) (61)
Nebraska was looking to finally turn the corner for head coach Scott Frost, but the ‘Huskers lost to Illinois to open the season and Frost’s seat got considerably hotter in Lincoln. The Sooners were almost stunned after a second-half collapse against Tulane in Week 1, and then blew away a bad FCS Western Carolina team last week 76 – 0.
Prediction: Oklahoma 37 Nebraska 21
(8) Cincinnati Bearcats (2-0) (-3.0) @ Indiana Hoosiers (1-1) (51.0)
This is the first of two consecutive big contests for Cincinnati in their quest to crush the Power Five monopoly on the CFP, as they follow the Hoosiers game with a trip to Notre Dame. The Bearcats have yet to be challenged this season, but that should change on Saturday. Indiana came into the season with a top 20 ranking but got spanked 34 – 6 by Iowa to start the season.
Prediction: Cincinnati 27 Indiana 21
(22) Auburn Tigers (2-0) @ (10) Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0) (-6.5) (52.5)
Penn State opened the season with a big 12 – 10 road win over 12th ranked Wisconsin and then beat up on Ball State from the MAC 44 – 13. Auburn has scored over 60 points in its first two contests against Akron from the MAC and FCS Alabama State. It’s a good start for first-year head coach Bryan Harsin, who came on board from the same position at Boise State, but they take a big step up in class in the Nittany Lions.
Prediction: Auburn 31 Penn State 24
(15) Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0) @ West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) (-2.5) (50.5)
This is the renewal of a long-time rivalry between former independents and Big East foes. The Hokies pulled a big upset in Week 1, defeating 10th ranked and ACC Coastal favorite North Carolina 17 – 10 to assume early control of the division race. West Virginia lost to Maryland 30 – 24 and then routed FCS Long Island 66 – 0 in Week 2.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 27 West Virginia 24
Michigan State Spartans (2-0) @ (24) Miami Hurricanes (1-1) (-6.5) (54.5)
Michigan State thumped 2020 Big Ten West division winner Northwestern 38 – 21 to start the season and followed it up with a 42 – 14 win over FCS Youngstown State. They’ll be a tough matchup for Miami, who has been unimpressive in a blowout loss to Alabama and a close 25 – 23 win over the Sun Belt’s Appalachian State. The oddmakers appear to think we’re still watching the Hurricanes of the 1980’s.
Prediction: Michigan State 30 Miami 27.
