Washington will be well-rested coming into this affair after getting a bye in Week 5 following their narrow 30-24 loss against California in Week 4. The unranked Huskies failed to cover the spread against Cal as a 1-point home favorite to snap their three-game ATS winning streak. The good news for college football bettors that like the Huskies is that Washington owns one of the very best defenses in the country…and that alone generally allows the Huskies to stay with superior teams. Washington ranks a stellar 17th in points allowed (15.8 ppg) and is also getting some respectable play out of freshman quarterback  Jake Browning, although it’s clear the young signal-caller is still in the learning stages of his development. Browning has completed an impressive  64.4 percent of his passes this season for 966 yards with five touchdowns, though he has thrown four interceptions, including two against Cal. Still, the fact of the matter is that Chris Petersen teams don’t often get blown out of the water. In Petersen’s first season with the Huskies last year, Washington only lost one game by more than this contest’s 17-point spread and the Huskies have covered the spread in their only road game this season.

USC looked absolutely fantastic in its 42-14 smackdown over Pac-12 rival Arizona State on Saturday as they bounced back from their humbling 41-31 Week 3 home loss against Stanford. The Trojans (3-1 SU, 301 ATS) have an elite quarterback in strong-armed senior signal-caller Cody Kessler and one of the most explosive offenses in the nation. Kessler has been fantastic this season in completing an insane 78.7 percent of his passes for 922 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions and USC ranks ninth in total offense, 11th in passing and fifth in scoring (46.8 ppg). Did I forget to mention that the Trojans also have  one of the nation’s best wide receivers in speedy sophomore JuJu Smith (22 catches, 43 yards, 19.7 ypc, 4 TD’s)?

While I don’t think there’s much doubt that USC will win this home contest to keep their playoff hopes alive, I think the bottom line for this Week 6 Pac-12 pairing is that the point spread is just a few points too high for the Trojans to cover.Washington is 2-2 ATS over its last four road games against USC and 2-2 ATS over their last four games as a double-digit underdog. Washington cashed in as a 12.5-point underdog in their 2015 regular season opener at Boise State and I can see them giving the Trojans a tough way to go in this matchup before coming up short in their bid for the outright road win. The Huskies are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an SU loss and a near-perfect 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following a bye week. On the flip side, USC is just 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games following an SU win and just 1-4 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win. Washington is 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall. While the Home team in this series is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings, the Huskies are 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings against USC.
