UAB vs Georgia Betting Preview | 2021 NCAAF Expert Analysis

Georgia won an absolute war against No. 3 Clemson in Week 1 of the college football season, which jumped the Dawgs to No. 2 in this week’s Top 25. UGA could be looking at a bit of a letdown game on Saturday against UAB but is a heavy favorite on the NCAAF odds.

Series History

Georgia leads the all-time series with UAB 2-0. The teams met in 2003 (16-13) and in 2006 (34-0) in Sanford Stadium.

Why Bet on UAB?

UAB (1-0) hasn’t played since a Sept. 1 victory over FCS school Jacksonville State, 31-0. UAB scored on three straight possessions starting late in the second quarter through the opening drive of the second half, building a 17-0 lead just under three minutes into the third quarter. Redshirt senior quarterback Tyler Johnston III led the Blazers’ offense with 320 passing yards and two touchdowns. Johnston III moved into tie for third all-time in UAB career touchdown passes (37) and is alone in fourth for career passing yards (4,749).

The Blazers outgained the Gamecocks 518-155, marking UAB’s first 500-yard game since Week 3 of last season and its first shutout since 2018. Bill Clark is now 6-0 in season openers as UAB’s head coach. UAB held Jacksonville State to just 2-of-12 on third down. Getting off the field on third down has been a staple in Clark’s defense as the Blazers ranked second nationally in third down defense in 2018, third in 2019 and seventh in 2020. UAB was just one of five teams in the country to pitch a shutout in Week 1, along with Boston College, NC State, Virginia and South Carolina.

The Blazers are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches Poll for the second straight week. Saturday’s game marks the 11th time UAB has faced a top 10 opponent, and the Bulldogs’ No. 2 ranking ties for the highest ranked team UAB has faced in program history (along with Tennessee in 1998).

In his last three starts, Johnston III has thrown for 788 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions while completing 62.2% of his passes. In his last two games, Trea Shropshire has 10 catches for 307 yards and two touchdowns. He has emerged as UAB’s top deep threat with an average of 30.7 yards per catch in those two contests.

UAB has won 35 games since returning to action in 2017, the most wins of any C-USA team during that span.

Why Bet on Georgia?

Georgia beat No. 3 Clemson 10-3 last Saturday in an absolute defensive war. It marked the end of Clemson’s 10-game win streak against SEC opponents in the regular season dating back to 2014.

Dawg QB J.T. Daniels began his second season under center for the Bulldogs (1-0) with a 22-of-30 passing performance for 135 yards. As a team, the Bulldogs ran for 121 yards on 31 attempts. The UGA defense was the story, allowing 180 total yards of Clemson offense and only four plays of over 10 yards. Clemson was just 5-for-16 on third down.

Georgia carried a shutout through three quarters. In the first half, Georgia held the Tigers to 90 yards (1 rushing yard, 89 passing) on 30 plays. The Tigers’ longest play of the night was a 44-yard completion in the fourth quarter. The Tigers scored with 9:08 left in the game on a 22-yard field goal to cut Georgia’s lead to 10-3. The first-half shutout marked the first time in 143 games that the Tigers failed to score in the opening half.

UGA had seven sacks, one shy of a school record. The lone TD was a Christopher Smith 74-yard interception return for a TD in the second quarter. Georgia registered its 19th score on defense or special teams in the Kirby Smart era that began in 2016. It was the fifth pick-six and the longest return under Smart. There have been 16 TDs and three safeties. With a non-offensive score, Georgia is now 16-1 under Smart. For only the third time since 2002, Georgia won a game where the defense scored a touchdown and the offense did not.

Daniels might miss this game with an injury to his midsection. He is 5-0 as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. It would be Carson Beck if Daniels can’t go. Beck threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns in Georgia’s spring game to pass 2020 starter Stetson Bennett IV on the depth chart. Beck was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020 out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Wide receivers Dominick Blaylock and Kearis Jackson missed Clemson game, but could be back against UAB. Tight end Darnell Washington is doubtful as he recovers from foot surgery.
