Why Bet on UNLV?

The Rebels helped Boise State greatly with a 69-66 triple-overtime win over Wyoming on Saturday. Boise State needed Wyoming to lose twice for BSU to reach the conference title game — assuming the Broncos win out. The game marked the highest combined scoring game (135 points) in UNLV and Mountain West history, and is the highest scoring game of the 2016 season. It is also the second highest scoring game in NCAA history. The 135 total points were just one shy of the FBS record (136) set by Boise State (69) and UNR (66) in 4OTs on Oct. 14, 2007. The previous highest-scoring game in Mountain West history was 117 by BYU (45) and Hawaii (72) on Dec. 8, 2001. For UNLV, junior quarterback Kurt Palandech rushed for 157 yards and threw for a career-high 252 yards in the shootout. The Rebels (4-6, 3-3 Mountain West) rushed for 401 yards, led by Palandech’s performance. It was the second-most rushing yards in a game by a quarterback in school history, behind Hunkie Cooper’s 165 vs. Oregon State in 1991. Palandech made his first start of the season at quarterback for the Rebels. The former JC transfer started three games in his first season at UNLV last season. With starting running back Lexington Thomas out with a high ankle sprain, fellow sophomore Xzaviar Campbell rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown and added a 18-yard touchdown catch in his first significant action since the season opener. Senior David Greene had 70 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 27-yard score. Charles Williams was a little banged up but still ran for 65 yards as he broke the school’s freshman record for rushing yards in a season with 645 (624, James Wofford, 1997). Jericho Flowers, a converted defensive back who started at receiver, added a 34-yard touchdown run for the Rebels, who climbed to 14th in the country in rushing offense (252.7 ypg). This marks only the second time in the last seven seasons that the Rebels won more than three (7-6 in 2013) games.

Brett Rypien threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns as Boise State racked up a season-high 603 yards of total offense, 403 of them coming before halftime. Jeremy Nichols, the nation’s leading scorer, ran for 153 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 36 and 5 yards. McNichols now has 39 career rushing touchdowns, tying D.J. Harper (2007-12) for fifth all-time at Boise State. Wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck caught five passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. It was his 14th-career 100-yard receiving game, making him Boise State’s career leader in that category. Sperbeck now has 10 on the year, becoming the first Bronco receiver to have at least 10 scoring receptions in a season since Matt Miller has 12 in 2013. Saturday’s win marked Boise State scoring at least 50 points against an opponent in consecutive meetings for the first time since the Broncos went over the mark four-straight times against Fresno State, scoring 61 points (2008), 51 (2009 and 2010) and 57 (2011) over that span. Boise State’s win, combined with Wyoming’s 69-66, triple-overtime loss at UNLV, pulls the Broncos into a tie with the Cowboys atop the Mountain Division at 5-1. Boise will catch a break here as UNLV will be without its No. 1 target Friday, as junior wide receiver Devonte Boyd suffered a broken arm in the win over Wyoming. Last season against the Broncos, Boyd had 116 yards. The team’s top pass catcher expected to play Friday is tight end Andrew Price, who has 13 receptions for 166 yards.
