How to Bet USC at Texas College Football Week 3 Lines

Written by on September 14, 2018

Over the years, there have been some fantastic National Championships played between the top two teams in college football. What you tend to notice, though, is that a lot of the previous winners and runners-up are no longer in contention for a title, such as the nature of the college game. The Alabama Crimson Tide of the last 10 years is something of an outlier in that they have been able to repeatedly reload and get back to the top of the mountain after losing a lot of players to the NFL. A couple of years prior to the start of Alabama’s current reign, the USC Trojans and Texas Longhorns played one of the best National Championship game ever, with Texas winning it via a late TD run from Vince Young. Since then, and for various reasons, both teams have fallen out of the spotlight, but both are looking to climb back to the top ASAP. The Longhorns are in as a 3 ½ point home favorite, with the point total set at 47.

Why bet on the USC Trojans?

While the Trojans started the season with a win, it proved to be a bit of a struggle, as they were forced to overcome a slow start to get the 43-21 win over UNLV. Getting the Week 1 win was good, but not so for bettors who had taken USC to cover the spread. The offense was unable to gain any sort of traction against a very good Cardinal defense in Week 2, with Stanford going on to win that one 17-3. The defeat marked the second straight week that the Trojans failed to cover the spread in a game that they started as a 4 ½ point underdog. The Trojans will be on the road this weekend, which could mean more bad news for them ATS, as they have only covered twice in their last 8 road games. You might imagine that USC had struggled given those stats, but they have in fact won 21 of their last 25 games overall.

Why bet on the Texas Longhorns?

It has not been the start to the season that the Longhorns had hoped for, as they kicked things off with a stunning loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in Week 1. While they got back on track with a win last week, the Longhorns are still 0-2 ATS to start the year. To make matters worse, they are likely to be without their starting RB this week, and with Ingram being perhaps their best offensive weapon in the early going, that could spell trouble. Covering the spread has proven to be a bit of a difficult task for Texas, as they have now just done so twice in their last 7 games.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

Despite the potential absence of Ingram from the Texas line-up, I still think these two are really evenly matched. The Longhorns have the home field edge here, but I believe that the Trojans can go on the road and spring the mild upset, both SU and ATS. Score: USC Trojans 30 – Texas Longhorns 27
