How to Bet Utah State vs BYU NCAAF Week 6 Spread & Pick

Written by on October 4, 2018

Really not a heck of a lot at stake Friday night other than state bragging rights as Utah State visits previously ranked BYU. The Cougars fell out of the Top 25 after getting slaughtered last week at a good Washington team. The Cougars are slight NCAAF lines favorites to rebounds.

BYU was routed 40-24 at Utah State last year. Jalen Davis had three interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, as Utah State forced seven BYU turnovers. Kent Myers threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third for the Aggies but the defense took over after the Cougars opened a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. The next 13 BYU possessions produced four interceptions, three lost fumbles, two punts, three turnovers on downs and a field goal. Ula Tolutau ran for a career-high 102 yards on 21 carries for BYU.

BYU and Utah State are playing for the 88th time in the series. The Cougars hold the advantage at 48-36-3, including a 28-17-1 mark in Provo.

Why Bet on USU?

The Aggies might be pretty good. They nearly won Week 1 at No. 11 Michigan State and have won three straight since. They come off a 42-32 win over Air Force two weeks ago. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Love passed for a career-high 356 yards and two touchdowns. The first of Love’s career-high-tying two touchdown passes, a 43-yarder to senior wide receiver Aaren Vaughns with 1:02 left in the second quarter, put the Aggies ahead for good and gave them a 21-14 lead at the break.

Junior RB Gerold Bright recorded his second 100-yard rushing game of the season and the third of his career as he gained 101 yards on 11 carries. He also scored a pair of touchdowns in the game on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter. He has four rushing touchdowns this season and seven in his career. Fellow junior RB Darwin Thompson two rushing touchdowns and has a team-leading six touchdowns on the year, including at least one in every game.

Utah State ranks first in the Mountain West and fourth in the nation in scoring with an average of 51.5 points per game. USU also ranks third in the MW and 14th in the nation in completion percentage (.689), third in the MW and 30th in the nation in total offense (472.5 ypg), fourth in the MW and 42nd in the nation in sacks allowed (1.50 ppg), fifth in the MW and 28th in the nation in passing offense (284.5 ypg), fifth in the MW and 55th in the nation in rushing offense (188.0 ypg), and fifth in the MW and 57th in the nation in passing efficiency (140.6). The Aggies are also third in the Mountain West and 23rd in the nation with a third-down conversion percentage of 46.9 (23-49).

Utah State head coach Matt Wells is 2-3 all-time against BYU and is the first Aggie coach to have multiple wins against the Cougars since Bruce Snyder (1976-82) posted a 2-5 record against BYU with wins in 1978 and 1982. Utah State, which is 6-0 under Wells following a bye week, is looking to start a season 4-1 for the first time under Wells and for the first time since 2012.

Why Bet on BYU?

The Cougars probably won’t be ranked again this year after getting thumped 35-7 at Washington last Saturday. The Huskies did it on the ground and in the air on both sides of the ball, picking up 187 rushing yards while BYU managed only 34 yards. Led by quarterback Jake Browning, the Huskies had 277 passing yards to the Cougars’ 160.

Both quarterbacks were efficient with Browning going 23 for 25 while Tanner Mangum went 18 of 21. He now has 5,930 career passing yards, passing Gifford Nielsen (5,830) for No. 12 at BYU. Freshman running back Lopini Katoa led BYU in rushing and receiving while scoring the Cougars’ only touchdown.
Utah State vs BYU is scheduled for Friday Night.
Some bad news from that one as tight end Moroni Laulu-Pututau suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Cougars’ loss. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior ranks second on the team in receptions (14) and receiving yards (120). This is Laulu-Pututau’s second season-ending injury in as many years: a preseason Lisfranc foot injury kept him out for all 2017.

The good news for the Cougars is the likely return of defensive starters Anderson and safety Dayan Ghanwoloku. Both players sat out last week’s blowout loss to Washington and are excited to get back to help right the ship this week.

The Cougars have not lost back-to-back games in the Utah State series since the 1973 and 74 seasons. The winner of the BYU-Utah State game takes possession of “The Old Wagon Wheel.”
