College football fans across the country are ready for the action to begin, with Week 1 of the regular season now less than a month away.
These fans are all hyped about the possibility of their team making it to the playoffs now that we are going to have 12 teams going into the postseason.
My Analysis
The new format is sure to open the door for teams that ordinarily would never have a shot at getting into the playoffs, but which teams will rise to the occasion?
Every fan has an idea, but the fact of the matter is that we won’t really get a true idea of who will make it in until the games begin.
We can still make a guess, though, so let’s start by taking a look at the Virginia Tech Hokies.
^Virginia Tech Hokies Regular Season, Conference, and Win Total
Ordinarily, a 7-6 season would not be something to crow about, but for the Hokies, 2023 proved to be something of a breakout season.
It was their first winning season since 2019, plus they also won a bowl game for the first time since 2016.
Again, it’s not a spectacular season by any stretch of the imagination, but the trip back to relevancy very often comes in small steps.
The Hokies are considered to have one of the easier schedules in the ACC, with their win total for 2024 set at 8 ½.
One of the main reasons why the Hokies returned to a winning season last year was down to the play of QB Kyron Drones, who passed for 22 TD in the 11 games he played, while also adding something to the run game with his scrambling ability.
He will have some nice weapons to throw to, particularly with the return of Ali Jennings from a knee injury.
There are definitely some positives to see on the offensive side of the football, but there are still some concerns about the O-Line. They did improve last season, but they will need to be better still if the playoffs are the goal.
In the early part of the season, the Hokies defense struggled against the run, but they seemed to put it all together as the season progressed.
Virginia Tech ended the season in the top 20 in defense, which was the first for this team since 2017.
They made some moves via the portal, which should see the defense be stronger this season. As it stands at the moment, the Hokies are sitting at +1000 to win the conference, so they are still very much in the dark horse category.
^Virginia Tech Hokies Postseason Odds
One of the biggest issues for the Hokies last season was their ability to get the job done against the better teams in the ACC.
If they are to take another step forward this season, that is the first thing that needs to change.
While their schedule is relatively easy, they will need those signature wins to impress the playoff committee if they can find their way to 10 wins this season.
There is no way this team gets close to the National Championship, though, with the bookies listing them at +34000 to win it all.

2023 Virginia Tech Hokies
Winning and staying at the top in any sport is tough, but it is especially so in college football, with teams sometimes struggling to recruit well enough to keep pace with those who can. For the Virginia Tech Hokies, this will be Year 2 in the reign of head coach Brent Pry, who saw his team win just 3 games in the 2022 season. He is trying to build a team that fits the style of football he wants to play, which is not something that happens overnight. Will there be an improvement this coming season, or will the Hokies tread water and potentially sink even deeper? That is what we are going to look at here, so let’s take a closer look at the 2023 Virginia Tech Hokies to consider in your NCAA Football betting odds.

The Hokies in 2022
As we already touched upon at the top of this piece, 2022 was something of a write off for the Hokies, with Pry taking on the unenviable task of turning this team around. The 3 wins that the Hokies has last year was their worst showing since 1992, when they managed just 2 wins. The decline in recent years has been slow and steady, but there is a definite feeling that 2022 was the bottom for this team and that the only way to go is up. The goal for 2023 is to make it to a bowl game, which will require 6 wins. Can the Hokies get there? Let’s take a look and see.
Betting Odds for the Hokies in 2023
Let’s start by stating the obvious, which is that the Virginia Tech Hokies are still a long way from challenging for the ACC crown and making it to the playoffs, Goal number one will be to see an improvement on last year, which is a pretty low bar, truth be told. The bookies certainly seem to think there will be progress, though, as they have the win total for the Hokies set at 6 ½, which, if they can top that number, would definitely be a sign of improvement.
The Hokies offense was an absolute nightmare last season, but they have been busy in the portal, bringing in a ton of transfers that could help make things a good deal better. While there are more weapons on the offensive side of the football, the O-Line is still a concern for the Hokies, and it is much the same story on the defensive side of the football. The secondary looks strong, but the front seven is still very much a work in progress. There is a lot that needs to go right on both sides of the ball if this team is to get the 6 wins required to make it to a bowl game.
I am willing to take a shot with the Hokies and go with them to get over the 6 ½ win total, albeit by the very slimmest of margins. With that in mind, I would also take them to go to a bowl game this season. It really isn’t worth talking about their odds to win the conference or make the playoffs, as both of those goals still seem to be a long way off.
