It hasn’t been a good week for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. They went into their game at Louisville last weekend expecting to win. After turning the ball over eight times, Wake Forest left Louisville with a 48-21 loss. They dropped from #10 in the polls to #20. Now they head just down the road to Raleigh to take on the 21st-ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack.
The Wolfpack are coming off of a one-point victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies. With both teams being 6-2 on the season, and 2-2 in the ACC, this game is huge for both of them. Let’s preview each of the two teams, and then we’ll give you our prediction for this big ACC showdown.
Demon Deacons vs Wolfpack NCAA Football Week 10
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Quietly, Dave Clawson has turned Wake Forest into a very good football program. Wake has been one of the top programs in the ACC, and has played in some very big bowl games over the past few seasons.
Sam Hartman has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football over the past few seasons. Hartman had a horrible game last weekend against Louisville, turning the ball over six times and being benched. He’ll be looking to rebound against a very good NC State defense.
North Carolina State
After leaving Northern Illinois, Dave Doeren has done a great job of rebuilding the North Carolina State program. He has made them relevant in the ACC again. With their two losses in the ACC, it is highly unlikely that a championship game berth is in the cards. Now they’re trying to win out to earn a trip to a better bowl game.
With NC State quarterback Devin Leary lost for the season, Doeren has played two quarterbacks, Jack Chambers and MJ Morris. When Chambers was ineffective against Virginia Tech, Morris came in and played well. Doeren says that both will play this week, but that Morris will get a majority of the snaps.
As for the NC State defense, they know they’ll have their hands full this weekend. Hartman wasn’t well last weekend, and NC State is expecting him to rebound and play a good game this weekend.
Prediction
These two teams are no strangers to one another. This is the second-longest continuous series in the FBS. These two have met every season since 1910, with the Wolfpack leading 67-42-6. In the past two seasons, these two have played to a 45-42 score. In 2020, North Carolina State won on their home turf, with Wake Forest returning the favor last season in Winston-Salem.
North Carolina State has won its last 15 home games. Wake Forest hasn’t won in Raleigh since 2018. The Demon Deacons come into this one as a 3.5-point favorite, according to the oddsmakers.
In looking at the betting numbers, all signs point to Wake Forest winning the game. The Deacons are 4-1 against the spread in their last five. They are also 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against NC State. On the flip side, NC State is 0-5 against the spread in their last five games.
With all of that being said, we’re going to follow the signs and go with Wake Forest. We think that this one will be close, and Wake Forest will score a late touchdown to win the game by seven points.
