Why Bet on Washington State?

The Cougars upset Oregon 51-33 last week. Washington State rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns. Jamal Morrow, Gerard Wicks and James Williams each ran for two touchdowns for Washington State (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12), which was coming off a bye week. Coach Mike Leach said the passing of Luke Falk, who threw for 371 yards, helped set up the ground attack. WSU has recorded two straight games with 200+ rushing yards for the first time since 2005.

Against Oregon, the Cougars tallied eight tackles-for- loss including 3.5 by Hercules Mata’afa who also recorded a sack which resulted in a safety. The redshirt-sophomore defensive end is tied atop the Pac-12 with 7.0 tackles-for- loss. Meanwhile, Falk enters the week fourth in the country in passing yards per game (373.8), No. 20 in passing touchdowns (12) and second in completion percentage (.743).

Stanford will be at a disadvantage this weekend when it prepares to face WSU's Air Raid without its two starting cornerbacks Junior Alijah Holder and sophomore Quentin Meeks both missed the Cardinal’s game against UW due to injury, and Stanford coach David Shaw has conceded that both players are “still most likely out.” Holder led the team in pass breakups before he was injured during the UCLA game. He was also responsible for four tackles in Stanford’s 30-28 win over WSU last season. Meeks was instrumental in the Cardinal’s win over WSU last year. He intercepted Falk twice in the second half, and Stanford’s offense ultimately scored 10 points off Meeks’ picks.

Washington State is looking to snap an eight-game skid to Stanford who lead the all-time series 40-25- 1. The Cardinal have claimed the last four meetings in Stanford including a 34-17 contest in 2014. WSU’s last win over Stanford came in 2007, 33-17 in Pullman and the last win in Stanford came in 2006, 36-10. Last season, a potential game-winning field goal attempt missed wide right as time expired.

Why Bet on Stanford?

The Cardinal lost 44-6 at No. 10 Washington last week. Stanford star Christian McCaffrey saw his Heisman Trophy aspirations hit a major speed bump. McCaffrey was held to 49 yards rushing on 12 carries, five catches for 30 yards and continued his streak of never scoring an offensive touchdown in a road game. It was McCaffrey’s fewest yards rushing since 2014 at California when he had 19 yards on three carries.

Stanford’s only TD came late in the third quarter on a 19-yard pass from Ryan Burns to J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. Washington scored on every first-half possession and had eight quarterback sacks in a dominating performance that put the Huskies in the driver’s seat for the Pac-12 North title. It was Stanford’s worst loss since a 41-3 drubbing at the hands of Arizona State on Sept. 29, 2007, and its worst loss in history while ranked in the top 10.

Since 2010, Stanford has lost consecutive games once. That was in 2014, when the Cardinal fell to Oregon and Utah, the latter in double-overtime. Last year, Stanford dropped its opener at Northwestern, and then reeled off eight straight wins. In 2013, the Cardinal bounced back from defeats to Utah and USC to win three in a row. And in 2012, Stanford rallied from a tough loss at Washington to beat Arizona in overtime the following week. The Cardinal have averaged 34.1 points after losses under Shaw, with an average margin of victory of 23.8 points.

The Cardinal are 48-6 at Stanford Stadium since 2008 and have not dropped an October home game since 2007. In four games against Leach’s Cougars, the Cardinal has limited Washington State to 95 yards rushing on 71 attempts (1.3 yards/carry). Washington State quarterbacks have been sacked 19 times in those four contests. The Cardinal have twice faced Washington State at Stanford Stadium under Shaw while limiting the Cougars to minus-44 yards rushing.
