September 4th marks the official Week 1 of the college football season., but there are in fact quite a few games prior to that. In recent years, we have seen games played the previous Saturday to the opening weekend, with some even referring to it as Week 0. All told, there are 5 games set to go this coming Saturday, including one that is likely to steal the spotlight a little. Let’s take a closer look at the 4 games that are currently on the board so you can bet against their NCAAF odds.
NCAA Football – Aug. 28th Games Betting Previews
Nebraska Cornhuskers at Illinois Fighting Illini
This is the game that most people are going to be focusing on this Saturday, especially since it will be Bret Bielema’s first game in charge of Illinois. The Illini come into this one as a 7-point underdog at home, which is no real surprise when you consider that they are 2-6 SU in their previous 8 meetings with the Cornhuskers. The bet that I am looking at for this one is the UNDER 55, as both of these teams have skewed that way recently. The UNDER has hit in 6 of the last 8 for Nebraska, while also hitting in 5 of the last 6 opening games for Illinois.
UCONN Huskies at Fresno State Bulldogs
This is a game that looks to be little more than a warm-up for the Fresno State Bulldogs, who are in as a 27 ½ point favorite. I am usually averse to playing spreads of that size, especially in the opening game of the season, but is it worth a look? There are a couple of things that suggest that it might be worth taking the Bulldogs to cover here, starting with the fact that UCONN are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games played in the month of August. Fresno State has also covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 season openers, so I am leaning towards the Bulldogs covering the spread.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Vs UCLA Bruins
This is an interesting matchup between a pair of teams who have only ever met once before, with UCLA winning that one in blowout fashion. The Bruins are in as a pretty solid 18 ½ point favorite here, with the general consensus seeming to be that they will cover the spread. I would certainly take a look at that as a possible wager, but I am also looking at the UNDER. The point total is set at a rather lofty 68 points, but you look at Hawaii and you see a team that has gone UNDER in each of their last 5 road games. UCLA has been trending over, but I just think the number is too high.
UTEP Miners Vs New Mexico State Aggies
The Miners go on the road for their opening game of the season and do so a s a 9-point favorite. There are actually a couple of trends here that could give you a pair of very good betting options for this game. The first of these is that the favorite has covered the spread in each of the last 7 meetings between these two teams. It is also worth noting that the OVER has hit in 6 of the last 8 when the UTEP Miners and New Mexico State Aggies go head-to-head. Take your pick, or maybe play both those picks.
