Why Bet on BYU

With oft-injured senior signal-caller Taysom Hill suffering his fourth season-ending injury in five years in BYU’s (9-3 ATS) regular season finale, the Cougars will turn to sophomore Tanner Mangum to get the win over Mountain West Conference rival Wyoming (9-4 ATS) when they take to the gridiron for the 2016 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Magnum completed a solid 59.9 percent of his passes for 3,377 yards with 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as a freshman last season after Hill was lost for the season. Mangum also played sparingly in BYU Cougars‘ final three games this season while completing 14-for-18 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. BYU will also look to unheralded senior running back Jamaal Williams in this contest after the fleet-footed ball-carrier rushed for a stellar 1,165 and 11 scores despite missing three of BYU’s final five games with an ankle injury.

Why Bet on Wyoming

Wyoming had one of their best seasons in ages and is led by sophomore signal-caller Josh Allen who threw for 2,996 yards with 26 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. Allen will look to hook up early and often with speedy senior wide receiver Tanner Gentry (18.7 yards per 65 receptions, 12 touchdowns). The Cowboys also have their own gifted running back in junior Brian Hill, who rushed for 1,767 yards and 21 touchdowns to finish third and second, respectively in the Mountain West Conference. Hill however, could have a tough way to go against a BYU defense that ranked eighth against the run nationally by limiting opposing running backs to an average of 108.4 yards per game.

Expert Prediction and Final Score Pick

While I like BYU to get the outright win in this contest, I like Wyoming to cover the spread as a double-digit underdog. I know the Cowboys have an overly generous defense that gave up a whopping 34.8 points per game this season to rank 104th nationally, but Wyoming can also score the ball quite well as evidenced by the fact that they put up 37.0 points per game this season. While BYU has gone 4-1 ATS in their last five games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings against Wyoming, the Cowboys have compiled a bankroll-boosting 7-2 ATS mark in their last nine games. While BYU is the better team in this matchup, I like the Cowboys to put up a fantastic effort to keep the final score right around a touchdown difference.
