Betting the 2024 Tour de France

The 2024 Tour de France has a clear top three.

It’s going to be difficult for anybody to beat Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, or even Primoz Roglic. Still, if those three suffer crashes or for some reason aren’t at their best, there is a host of other talented cyclists waiting in the wings.

Check out Tour de France cycling odds and analysis for three underdogs who could grab the yellow jersey should Pogacar, Roglic, and Vingegaard fail.

Top Underdog Yellow Jersey Pick: Matteo Jorgensen (+1800)

American Matteo Jorgensen could be ready for a breakout Tour de France.

The Visma-Lease a Bike cyclist has already had an amazing 2024. He won the Paris-Nice major stage race, securing the yellow jersey.

It was the 24-year-old Jorgensen’s first victory.

Then later in the year, he finished second behind Roglic at the Criterium du Dauphine.

The second place signals that Jorgensen is on the improve.

If he improves further, who knows?

Like every cyclist not named Vingegaard or Pogacar (even Primoz Roglic falls in this category), winning the Tour de France is going to be difficult.

So if you’re going to throw money behind an underdog, Jorgensen might be the dog to back.

Second Choice: Remco Evenepoel (+1600)

Remco Evenepoel won the Volta as Algarve this year.

He appeared ready to take the next step onto at least Roglic’s level until the massive crash at the Itzulia Basque Country.

During the crash, Evenepoel broke his collarbone and scapula.

Like Primoz Roglic, Evenepoel returned in the Criterium Du Dauphine.

He says he isn’t pressuring himself much to at the Tour de France, which could work in his favor.

A relaxed Evenepoel may exceed all expectations.

Third Choice: Carlos Rodriguez (+1600)

Rodriguez finished fifth at the 2023 Tour de France.

The fifth place heralded that he can hang with the best cyclists in the world.

This year, Carlos finished fourth at the Criterium du Dauphine.

Rodriguez hopes to peak at the Tour de France.

Again, even if he peaks, it may not be good enough to beat Vingegaard or Pogacar. B

ut if the two chalks falter, Rodriguez should be right there.

He’s worth a look if you want to back an underdog to wear the yellow jersey.

2020 Tour de France Expert Analysis & Update

Previous Betting News

The 2020 Tour de France is in its final week of cycling. Check out an update on where the favorites stand heading into Sunday, Sep 20, the final day of cycling so you can rush ahead and make your bets against their Tour de France odds!

2020 Tour de France Update: Injuries, Highlights, Predictions

When: Saturday, Aug. 29 – Sunday, Sep 20

General Classification Tour de France winner down to Roglic and Pogacar

Just two cyclists have a shot to wear the yellow jersey and win the Tour. Primoz Roglic, the race favorite before Stage 1, has a solid 57 seconds lead over Tadej Pogacar. Roglic has won just a single race, Stage 4, but he’s finished well enough in the other stages to keep the yellow jersey.

Since the Stage 4 victory, Roglic hasn’t finished worse than 32nd in any race. He’s secured 30th or better finishes in 10 races up to Stage 16. The great finishes include a second in Stage 9 and a second in Stage 15.

Primoz added another second in Stage 17 – Col de la Loze. He leapfrogged top contender Tadej Pogacar to finish behind Astana cyclist Miguel Angel Lopez. Roglic’s finish is what bumped him ahead of Pogacar by 57 seconds.

Most considered Stage 17 the toughest of the 2020 Tour de France. The race ended at the top of the Col de La Loze, 2,304 meters above sea level. An average gradient of 7.8 percent on a 21.5 kilometer ascent greeted cyclists as they climbed to the top of Col de la Loze. Bicycling fans can’t look past how Roglic easily handled the climb.

With just 4 stages left, it will take a massive effort by Tadej, and a breakdown by Primoz, for Roglic to relinquish the GC yellow jersey. The pre-Tour de France favorite looks like he’ll grab the trophy for Jumbo-Visma unless something unexpected happens.

Bernal drops out leaving Ineos Grenadiers without their top cyclist

It started out as a tough Tour de France for 2019 winner Egan Bernal. Unfortunately, it didn’t get easier. The top cyclist at bicycling power Ineos Grenadiers, Bernal dropped out before Stage 17.

He suffered some back pain during Stage 15. The performance in Stage 15 ended Bernal’s chances to catch Roglic. Although Egan tried to do what he could in Stage 16, the back pain led to pain in his knees.

Like any athlete, when a cyclist feels pain in one area of his or her body, the bicyclist can unconsciously overcompensate with another part of the body. That may have happened to Bernal. With no chance of winning, and in a lot of pain, Bernal called it quits on Tuesday.

Roglic’s 2020 Tour de France Lead looks insurmountable

After Stage 17, Primoz Roglic appears to have an insurmountable lead. Col de la Loze winner Miguel Angel Lopez jumped to third place. Tadej Pogacar remains in second. But, as we wrote above, Pogacar must make up 57 seconds on Roglic.

Primoz looks like the 2020 Tour de France winner. He’s not the only winner. Anybody who loves sports should smile. A month or so ago, some questioned whether France could pull off a Tour this year. Not only has France pulled it off, but the racing has been as exciting as it’s ever been.

Have a great rest of your week!

The 2022 Tour de France is underway. In addition to being able to bet on which cyclists win which jersey, yellow, green, polka dot, or white, odds should land for winners of each of this week’s stages. 2022 Tour de France Updates Betting Opportunities During the Week

2022 Tour De France – Stages

When: Tuesday, July 5 – Friday, July 8

Tuesday, July 5 – Stage 4 – Hilly

Dunkirk-Calais 106 miles

Preview: It’s difficult to predict what will happen at this stage. The Tour de France hasn’t visited the site of the largest military evacuation in history, the Dunkirk evacuation happened in World War II, in 15 years.

Wednesday, July 6 – Stage 5 – Hilly

Lille Metropole-Arenberg Porte Du Hainaut 95 miles

Preview: There’s an old saying at the Tour de France, “You can’t win on the cobblestones, but you can lose it.”

The Paris-Roubaix cobblestones during Stage 5 are famous for ending Tour de France dreams. 11 sections at the Paris-Roubaix consist of around 12 miles. Cyclists that can weather the 11 cobblestone sections stand a chance of finishing Stage 5 at the top.

Thursday, July 7 – Stage 6 – Hilly

Binche-Longwy 136 miles

Preview: Stage 6, Binche-Longwy, includes Belgium and France. Stage 6 is the first uphill finish at this year’s Tour de France.

Friday, July 8 – Stage 7 – Mountain

Tomblaine-La Super Plance des Belles Filles 109 miles

Preview: Everyone believes that Cofidis team member Guillaume Martin wins the polka dot jersey for King of the Mountain. Martin doesn’t have much chance of winning the yellow jersey.

He has a real shot of taking the King of the Mountain jersey. So Martin should provide his usual never say die attitude of cycling at Stage 7 in an attempt to win the polka dot shirt.

But Stage 7 could be important for another reason. The Tour de France lasts until July 24.

Cyclists looking for the top jersey prize, the yellow GC, sometimes wait until the final full week. But Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, and Jonas Vingegaard, may attempt to make an early move at Stage 7.

Saturday, July 9 – Stage 8 – Hilly

Dole-Lausanne 115 miles

Preview: By Stage 7, cyclists will have ridden in three different nations: Denmark, France, and Belgium. Stage 8 will see a fourth nation when cyclists race into Switzerland. The race finishes at the home city of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Sunday, July 10 – Stage 9 – Mountain

Aigle-Chatel Les Portes Du Soleil 119 miles

Preview: There are six mountain stages at the 2022 Tour de France. Of the six mountain stages, only one doesn’t include a summit finish.

Stage 8 is the lone mountain stage that doesn’t include a summit finish. Once again, King of the Mountain Cofidis member Guillaume Martin should put his best foot forward.
