2023 Tour de France Update
What are the Top Surprises so far at the Tour de France?
There hasn’t been many surprises because teams and cyclists know what they’re up against when they enter the Tour de France. Most everyone believed Vingegaard, Jumbo Visma’s top cyclist, and Pogacar, the top cyclist for UAE Team Emirates, would battle for the General Classification and yellow jersey title.
The two most significant surprises happened in Stage 5 and after. In Stage 5, Vingegaard made a massive move to leave Pogacar 53 seconds behind.
But Pogacar bounced back with impressive finishes. Heading into Stage 13, which takes place on Friday morning, Tadej is just 17 seconds behind Vingegaard.
Why has Pogacar Become the Favorite over Vingegaard?
Pogacar appears set for a run at the pre-race favorite. 17 seconds for a cyclist like Tadej Pogacar is nothing, which is why Vingegaard has fallen to second choice even though he started the 2023 Tour de France the favorite.
Also, we can’t look past the fact that Vingegaard couldn’t increase his 53 seconds lead over Pogacar. If Jonas had, the race might be over.
He didn’t. Instead, Jonas is 17 seconds away from relinquishing the lead.
Finally, heading into the 2023 Tour, many wondered if Pogacar would be at his best. The 2021 winner had suffered a wrist injury in May that led to missed training time.
It’s tough to win a race like the Tour de France, impossible almost, if you miss any time and Tadej missed a lot of traditional training time for sure.
But although Pogacar couldn’t race competitively, he managed a training schedule that allowed him to pinpoint the stages where he thought best to attack Vingegaard. So far, it’s worked.
Those are the reasons Tadej is the new chalk. At -134 Pogacar is a good play to beat his rival.
Can any Cyclist Outside of Pogacar and Vingegaard Win the 2023 Tour de France?
The only way for a cyclist like Jai Hindley to pull off the upset victory is if Pogacar and Vingegaard both crash out of the race. Other than that, no other cyclist will touch Tadej and Jonas.
To be clear, other cyclists in this year’s Tour are talented. It’s just that those two are by far the best at the 2023 Tour de France. Hindley is 2 hours and 40 minutes behind Pogacar, which means he’s 2 hours and 57 minutes behind Vingegaard.
Hindley is in third place. So the other cyclists are even further away from Pogacar and Vingegaard when it comes to winning the General Classification. The good news is that the odds on Tadej and Jonas make them both more than playable.
