What to Know About the Tour de France

With Tadej Pogacar, the reigning Giro d’Italia champion, hungry to reclaim his Tour de France crown, the stage is set for an unforgettable spectacle.

Heading into the 2024 Tour, Pogacar is a massive -220 favorite to wrest away the title from two time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.

Is Pogacar the one to beat? Can Vingegaard win a third straight Tour de France?

How will Primoz Roglic perform in what may be his final Tour?

But before you place your wagers, let’s delve into the world of Tour de France betting odds.

Check out 2024 Tour de France cycling odds, analysis, and picks for the world’s most famous cycling race.

2024 Tour de France Picks

Yellow Jersey Winner: Tadej Pogacar -220

Tadej didn’t just take the Giro d’Italia.

He dominated, blitzed, destroyed his opponents by a ridiculous 10 minutes. Actually, Pogacar beat his competition by more than 10 minutes.

He also won 6 stages along the way, which signals that the man isn’t messing around this season.

A hand injury interrupted his preparation for last year’s Tour de France. No such injuries have befallen Tadej this year.

Also, if not for Vingegaard’s late stages surge, Tadej would have won the 2023 Tour.

Pogacar is on a mission. Forget this idea of Tadej bouncing after the Giro d’Italia performance.

Nothing is standing his way from winning another yellow jersey.

Yellow Jersey Winner Pick: Tadej Pogacar

Second Choice: Jonas Vingegaard +200

If not for Pogacar’s brilliance at the Giro, Vingegaard might be the favorite.

For sure, Jonas has had to overcome the mental and physical anguish from the stage four crash at the Itzulia Basque Country that has rocked his preparation for the Tour de France.

But Jonas Vingegaard is one of the toughest athletes on the planet. So if anybody can overcome the issues that come with such a crash, he can.

But even if he heads to Italy and France one hundred percent, he’d be the second choice behind Pogacar.

The fact he may not be one hundred percent makes Pogacar the logical choice.

Vingegaard does offer decent odds, though. So if you believe he has Tadej’s number again, taking a shot makes sense.

Third Pick: Jonas Vingegaard

Third Choice: Primoz Roglic +850

Roglic was also involved in the Itzulia Basque Country crash but the effects on Primoz weren’t nearly as bad as they were on Vingegaard.

The crash at the Itzulia Basque Country didn’t effect Roglic’s ability to compete at the Tour de France.

The issue Roglic has is that although he’s one of the top cyclists in the world, he must hope for Vingegaard and Roglic to suffer some sort of issue during the race to have any shot of beating either powerhouse cyclist.

Roglic is a cut below the top two at this point in career even though he’s light years ahead of everyone else on the planet.

Third Pick: Primoz Roglic

Top Underdog Choice: Carlos Rodriguez +1600

Roglic, Pogacar, and Vingegaard must run into trouble for Carlos Rodriguez to have any shot of winning the Tour de France.

Three events happening to the top three likely won’t happen, which means Rodriguez doesn’t even offer fair odds at +1600.

But in case it does, and if you want to back an underdog, Carlos is your man.

The Spaniard finished fifth overall last year in his debut Tour.

He won Alpine stage at the 2023 Tour de France. Also, because he’s only 23, Rodriguez has plenty of upside.

Carlos finished fourth at the Criterium du Dauphine this year after winning the final mountain stage.

He is the top underdog pick should the best three falter.

Underdog Pick: Carlos Rodriguez

Previous Betting News

The 2023 Tour de France starts peddling on July 1 and doesn’t stop until July 23. After an amazing finish to the 2022 Tour, Jonas Vingegaard lifted the general classification trophy for Jumbo-Visma. Vingegaard is the favorite to repeat as the yellow jersey winner.

Second choice in the betting, Tadej Pogacar won the 2021 Tour de France. Which cyclists made it to our picks list?

2023 Tour de France General Classification Yellow Jersey Picks

Top Pick: Tadej Pogacar +172

Pogacar was having a terrific 2023 before fracturing his wrist at Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Since the wrist fracture, which happened in early spring, Tadej has been training for the Tour.

No doubt, the fractured wrist is the reason he is a +172 second choice to Vingegaard. If not for the fractured wrist, and if Pogacar had competed during the rest of the spring, he’d likely be the chalk.

For sure, Tadej will be looking for revenge. Vingegaard took over for Primoz Roglic last year as Jumbo-Visma’s top cyclist. Pogacar knows that to beat Vingegaard, he also has to beat Vingegaard’s teammates.

That won’t be easy, but Tadej is determined. Expect the best cyclist in the world to again wear the yellow jersey.

Tour de France Top Pick: Bet Tadej Pogacar to Win
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Second Pick: Jonas Vingegaard +115

In 2021, cycling in his first Tour de France, Vingegaard impressed. The chalk to win this year’s Tour finished second behind Tadej Pogacar.

Last year, Vingegaard was a third choice behind teammate Primoz Roglic to bring the yellow jersey back to Jumbo-Visma. For sure, many believed Vingegaard might overtake Roglic as Jumbo’s top cyclist.

But many also thought Jumbo-Visma might try to get Roglic a yellow jersey. So when Vingegaard beat Pogacar, when Jonas got the backing of his team, it was a slight surprise.
This year, Vingegaard has a giant bullseye on his back. Not only will Pogacar and Tadej’s team, UAE Team Emirates, be against Pogacar, but so will the rest of the teams at the Tour.

For sure Vingegaard can win the Tour. Jumbo-Visma, no matter how much money UAE  Team Emirates has put into their squad, remains the world’s best cycling team.

However, Vingegaard may have peaked too soon. Jonas won the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour of the Basque Country this year. So Pogacar is the top pick.

Tour de France Second Pick: Bet Jonas Vingegaard to Win
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Third Choice: Jai Hindley +1825

There’s a chasm between Pogacar’s second choice odds and Jai Hindley’s third choice odds. But although the chasm suggests Hindley has no shot, the Tour de France is a brutal race.

Favorites have crashed out of the event. If both Pogacar and Vingegaard end up failing to finish, not a great possibility but a possibility for sure, Hindley should be there to pick up the pieces.

Jai doesn’t have the team that Vingegaard and Pogacar has. So he will have to work hard. Outside of Pogacar and Vingegaard, we’re taking a shot. Hindley is a decent shot because he’s had a good 2023.

Tour de France Third Pick: Bet Jai Hindley to Win
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Top Underdog Play: David Gaudu +8500

Pogacar and Vingegaard will be so difficult to beat that the second place finisher at Paris-Nice this year is at 85-to-1 odds to wear the yellow jersey at the end of the event.

Gaudu didn’t just have a great Paris-Nice. He also finished fourth at the Tour of the Basque Country. For sure, the race would have to fall apart for Gaudu to sniff the top of the podium.

Then again, we’re getting +8500. So we wouldn’t have to bet much on a flyer with the best chance of winning should the 2023 Tour de France end up a mess.

Tour de France Underdog Pick: Bet David Gaudu to Win

2022 Tour de France Betting Update: Vingegaard Grabs the Lead Heading Into the Weekend

Previous Betting News

Heading into the weekend, two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar has fallen to second place. Pogacar must make up time versus Jumbo-Visma cyclist Jonas Vingegaard. Will Tadej close the gap in Stage 14 or Stage 15? Check out an update on which cyclists wear which jerseys in our Tour de France Betting update.

Updated Tour de France Betting Analysis for the Weekend | Cycling Odds

2022 Tour de France

When: July 1 – July 24
Where: Denmark & France
TV/Streaming: NBC Sports / Peacock

Vingegaard grabs the yellow jersey

The weekend could determine which cyclist, Jonas Vingegaard or Tadej Pogacar, wears the yellow jersey heading into the Tour de France’s final week. Vingegaard grabbed the lead over Pogacar at Stage 11.

As they head into Saturday, the two cyclists with the best chances of winning the general classification yellow jersey look tough to beat. Jonas, Jumbo-Visma’s top cyclist, has a 2 minutes and 22 seconds lead over the Slovenian.

Pogacar attempted to make two moves at Stage 12 to cut the gap, but failed in both attempts. Vingegaard should carry the lead into Saturday’s Stage 14.

Although Pogacar and Vingegaard deserve our attention, and it’s likely one of the two will win the GC, we shouldn’t take our eyes off Britain’s Geraint Thomas.

The former Tour de France winner is 2 minutes and 26 second behind Vingegaard. Thomas is just 4 seconds behind Pogacar. There’s a lot of racing left.

So if Vingegaard stumbles, Thomas might have a shot. The UK’s best hope at a Tour victory can make up 4 seconds no problem.

No doubt, the most honorable team effort this Tour goes to Primoz Roglic. The pre-race second choice relentlessly attacked Pogacar at Stage 11, opening the door for Jumbo teammate Vingegaard.

At the end of the stage, Roglic said, “I cracked myself but I didn’t care.” Kudos to Roglic who decided that his sliver of a hope of winning the yellow jersey wasn’t as important as a Jumbo-Visma general classification victory.

If Jonas wins the GC, he owes Primoz way more than a steak dinner.

Van Aert increases green jersey lead, Pogacar continues white jersey lead

Wout Van Aert, another Jumbo-Visma cyclist, has a close to insurmountable lead over Tadej Pogacar. Heading into Friday’s Stage 13, Van Aert had 321 points.

Pogacar was in second with 159. Tadej won’t catch Van Aert and he may not catch Vingegaard. But the Slovenian should continue to wear the white jersey.

Even though Tom Pidcock won Stage 12, becoming the youngest ever to take the victory at the Briancon Alpe d’Huez, Tadej has a 5 minutes and 17 second lead over Pidcock for the jersey that goes to the best young cyclist.

Cofidis cyclist Geschke continues to wear the polka dot jersey

For the polka dot shirt, Simon Geschke should take about a 4 points lead over Louis Meintjes into Stage 14. Geschke has 43 points. Meintjes has 39.

Jonas Vingegaard is in third-place with 36 points. The polka dot, which goes to the top climber, will be up for grabs if Geschke falls.

In addition to Meintjes and Vingegaard, Italy’s Giulio Ciccone and Frances Pierre Latour also have chances. Ciccone and Latour both have 35 points.

Weekend Stages – Saturday and Sunday

Stage 14 – Saturday, July 16 – Saint-Etienne Mende – Hilly
Stage 15 – Sunday, July 17 – Rodez Carcassonne – Flat

2022 Tour de France Opening Odds

Which cyclist among Pogacar, Roglic, and Vingegaard offers overlay odds?

Primoz Roglic is one of the best cyclists in the world. But Roglic has never won the Tour de France General Classification, also called the Yellow Jersey. 2022 shouldn’t be his year.

At +200, Roglic is an underlay. So is Jonas Vingegaard at +500. Roglic’s teammate, Vingegaard raced great on his way to a second-place general classification at the 2021 Tour de France.

But the only reason Vingegaard raced so well is because he picked up the slack after Roglic had to retire from the event. A healthy Roglic should dent Vingegaard’s chances.

Tadej Pogacar has won the last couple of Tour de Frances. He was fantastic in 2020 and in 2021. Although the odds are under even money, Pogacar is the overlay among the three chalks.

So far this year, Pogacar has won the UAE Tour, Strade-Bianche, and he put a beating onto Vingegaard, sweeping almost every jersey, when winning the Tirreno-Adriatico. Right now, Tadej Pogacar is a machine.

Which cyclist is the better bet between Carapaz and Martinez?

Richard Carapaz finished third in last year’s Tour de France. So far in 2022, he’s raced well, finishing second in the Giro d’Italia.

Daniel Martinez finished third in Paris-Nice and won the Tour of the Basque Country. But the Tour of the Basque Country isn’t a Grand Tour event like the Giro d’Italia, which is why Carapaz is the better play.

Which +3300 cyclist, Mas Nicolau or Thomas, deserves the longest look to win the 2022 Tour de France?

Enric Mas Nicolau finished sixth in last year’s Tour de France. He followed up the decent Tour de France finish with a nice second in the year’s last Grand Tour event, the Vuelta a Espana.

But although Mas Nicolau raced well last year, his 2022 hasn’t been nearly as impressive. He didn’t finish when cycling in the Tirreno-Adriatico and he finished ninth in the Tour of the Basque Country.

Geraint Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France and finished second in the 2019 race. He finished forty-first last year, but if he’s back to his best form, he could grab a top ten finish in 2022. So between Mas Nicolau and Thomas, Geraint appears to be the better choice.

Name the top +4000 to +5000 underdog play heading into June.

Jack Haig didn’t finish last year’s Tour de France. However, he followed up the DNF with an impressive third place finish in the Vuelta a Espana, a Grand Tour event.

So far in 2022, Haig has a sixth place finish in the Paris-Nice. Haig has a much better shot of winning the Tour de France, it’s not great, but it is better, than Wart Van Ert.

But Haig isn’t a better play than Adam Yates. The English cyclist finished forth in last year’s Vuelta a Espana. This year, he finished fourth in the Paris-Nice. The odds difference is enough to back Yates over Haig if you’re looking to throw money behind a big time longshot.

2022 Tour de France: Tadej Pogacar with Best Opening Betting Odds

Previous Betting News

Updated odds to grab the yellow jersey at the 2022 Tour de France suggests Tadej Pogacar wins a third straight title but he isn’t a lock. Pogacar is now a -160 choice when just two weeks ago he was at -165. Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard offer +330 and +375 odds. The rest of the field is at +1800 or higher. Check out updated Tour de France odds and an odds analysis.

2022 Tour de France: Tadej Pogacar with Best Opening Betting Odds

2022 Tour de France

When: July 1 – July 24

2022 Tour de France Opening Odds

Is Tadej Pogacar an Underlay or Overlay?

In the past couple of Tour de France races, Tadej Pogacar has dominated. He won the General Classification, the yellow jersey, in 2020 and 2021.

He won six individual stages in 2020 and last year. He won the Mountain Classification and the Young Rider Classification.

In every way imaginable, Pogacar has shown he’s the best cyclist in the world. This year, he won the Strade Bianche and the Tirreno-Adriatico.

Pogacar didn’t race in any of the other majors. So he’ll be fresh for the Tour. -160 aren’t great odds, but Pogacar is as solid of an under even money play as you’re going to find. The odds make Tadej an overlay.

Which Cyclist Between Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard has the Best Shot of Beating Pogacar?

Primoz Roglic was one of the favorites to win the 2021 Tour de France. But Roglic crashed early and had to withdraw.

Because Roglic retired, fellow Jumbo-Visma teammate Jonas Vingegaard picked up the slack. Vingegaard finished second behind Pogacar.

But this year, Roglic is back. He’s rode great, winning the Criterium du Dauphine and in Paris-Nice. If Roglic is at his best, and if he stays out of trouble this year, he will have a real shot of beating Pogacar. Give Primoz the nod over Jonas.

Among Vaslov, Martinez, and Thomas, Which Cyclist Offers the Most Overlay Odds to Wear the Yellow Jersey?

Thomas’ form has fallen off this year. He finished nineteenth at the Tour de Romandie, a race he won last year, and thirty-ninth at the Tour of the Basque Country.

Vlasov has rode well this year, winning the Tour de Romandie and finishing third at the Tour of the Basque Country. But Vlasov offers lower odds than Martinez, and Daniel has rode as well as Vlasov in 2022.

Daniel Martinez won the Tour of the Basque Country. He finished third at Paris-Nice. If you’re looking to back one of the three, Martinez is the best play.

Name the Longshot with the Best Chance of Pulling Off a Tour de France Upset Win

Ben O’Conner hasn’t had the best year. O’Conner didn’t finish at Paris-Nice. He finished sixth at the Volta a Catalunya and fifth at the Tour de Romandie.

Those finishes could be by design. O’Conner wants to have something left for the Tour de France. He finished a surprising fourth at the 2021 Tour and he and his team, AG2R Citroen, believe he can win the yellow jersey this year.

O’Conner is worth a look if you’re a longshot player. If not stick with backing Roglic, Pogacar, or Vingegaard.

2021 Tour de France Betting Odds: Tadej Pogačar and Primož Rogljič Favored to Win

Previous Betting News

Tour de France is back for the 108th time this year. After the COVID-19 pandemic moved the renowned cycling race to late summer last year, the race returns to its usual place on the calendar for 2021.

The 2021 Tour de France will run from June 26 – July 18, starting in Brest, where the world’s best cyclist will begin their 3,383 kilometers (2,102 miles) route through France. The race will culminate with a sprint finish on the renowned Champs-Élysées.

There are many reasons to be excited about the upcoming grand tour race and even more reasons to start placing our bets early. Here is our 2021 Tour de France betting preview, with all the information you’ll ever need to find the best bets on Tour de France betting odds.

2021 Tour de France Odds

Will the 2021 Tour de France Be a Rematch?

Cycling has produced some great comebacks throughout its history. However, there was none in recent history as memorable as Tadej Pogačar’s shocking comeback in last year’s Tour de France Stage 20 mountain time trial, when he beat his countryman Primož Roglič to overcome what seemed like an insurmountable deficit.

The Slovenian duo went toe to toe last year and were a clear cut above the field, so it makes sense to see them priced as the main favorites to repeat their success this summer.

The main question ahead of the 2021 Tour de France is whether it will be a Pogačar-Roglič rematch? Last year, Jumbo Visma fielded by far the most stacked team, and while Roglič was their star member, you can’t look past Tom Dumoulin, Sepp Kuss, Wout van Aert, and George Bennet, who dominated most of the race.

Many will remember Pogačar’s incredible run, but understanding how important is a well-rounded and strong team is the key to betting on cycling. That alone could make Roglič a more appealing bet than Pogačar since the latter surely won’t be able to go under the radar this year.

Can Any Of The Outsiders Impress?

Tour de France is no stranger to upset victories, so it makes sense to look at a few longshot picks. Pogačar wasn’t exactly a longshot bet last year, but he surely wasn’t one of the main betting favorites either, and that is to prove a point that outsiders can indeed win.

Richie Porte (+2800) stands out as a solid outsider pick with generous odds. The 36-year-old has been showing great form this season, and while he has achieved many great results, there is one that no one should look past.

Porte won the 2021 Criterium du Dauphine at the start of the month, and while that might not seem like a big deal, winning the said race is usually a good indication of success heading into the Tour de France. It should not come off as a surprise that Porte’s victory at that race saw his betting odds drop and has since passed Julian Alaphilippe on the betting market.

When we talk about Porte, you must also consider that he finished third in the Tour de France last year, 11th in 2019, and fifth in 2016. In 2018, Porte did not finish the race, albeit he won the Stage 3 trial.

The only concern with Porte is whether he can stay healthy throughout the race. If he manages to do that, he is definitely the guy to watch outside of the top favorites.

2020 Tour de France : Updates, Injuries, Highlights, Predictions, Odds to Win

When: Saturday, Aug. 29 – Sunday, Sep 20

Updated Odds to Win the 2020 Tour de France

Primoz Roglic takes charge

On Sunday, Sep 6, Roglic grabbed the Yellow Jersey. Racing up numerous climbs, Primoz finished second behind stage winner Pogacar Tadej. Roglic has continued to race so that he could add bonus time onto his lead.

Primoz knows that with the Alpine stages still to come. He and his team, Jumbo-Visma, can’t rest on their laurels. Roglic insists that it’s a “team goal to win” the Tour de France. Roglic stressed that it’s still “just the start of the Tour de France” and that there are plenty of tough stages for Jumbo-Visma left in the race.

At this point, Roglic and Jumbo-Visma look difficult to beat. We have more thoughts on why that’s the case in the next section.

Tour de France heads to final week with Roglic looking strong

Not counting Stage 12, check out the current top seven at the 2020 Tour de France. After Pogacar in seventh, the rest of the cyclists are at least a full minute behind the leader.

We added the seconds each cyclist is behind leader Primoz Roglic.

At this stage, cycling handicappers see this as a three-person race. Odds on Roglic are at -118. One of the reasons? Jumbo-Visma views a Roglic yellow jersey win as a team effort. Primoz himself considers a victory as a team effort.

Roglic’s colleague, Tom Dumoulin was one of the favorites heading into the event. Dumoulin sacrificed his chances in Stage 8 to push Roglic forward. The effort from other Jumbo-Visma cyclists makes Roglic a fair play at -118.

But, Primoz did crash out of the Criterium Dauphine. Also, Egan Bernal won’t go quietly away while Tadej Pogacar still has a shot. Pogacar survived a crash in Stage 10. He can excel on the Alpine stages.

Those who feel Nairo Quintana can get it done should jump on the odds. Quintana said that what he wants to do is stay close enough for a chance at the yellow jersey. Right now, that looks like a longshot, but crazy things should happen in the final week. So, don’t discount Nairo’s chances just yet.

Have a great rest of your week!

2020 Tour de France

Odds to Win the 2020 Tour de France

Roglic takes charge in Stage 4

Primoz Roglic, the +175 chalk to win the Tour before cyclists started pedaling on August 29, sprinted to the finish in the first summit race. Primoz got the 100-mile journey in 4-hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds.

Roglic cycles for Jumbo-Visma. JV is one of the top racing outfits in the world. His teammates set a fast-pace that Aliphilipe, the yellow jersey owner, said he couldn’t keep up with.

Towards the end of the race Roglic used a sprint to get to the finish line first. Primoz put questions regarding his form behind him. The crash he suffered at the Criterium du Dauphine hasn’t affect him at the Tour. Primoz is just 3 seconds behind Alaphilippe heading to Stage 5.

Pogacar on Roglic’s heels

Tadej Pogacar clocked in second in Stage 4. The UAE Team Emirates cyclist displayed amazing grit to sprint along with Roglic. He couldn’t get past the world’s number one rider, but he did well enough to grab second-place.

After 4-days of racing, Pogacar has shown he’s a legit contender to win the event. If he keeps it up, the 21-year-old could be the second youngest rider to ever win the Tour de France.

When will Bernal make his move?

Defending champion Egan Bernal is 17 seconds behind Julian Alaphilippe in the General Classification. The GC winner takes the yellow jersey and the individual Tour de France Championship.

Egan isn’t stressing. The young Ineos rider said that the goal is to not lose “too many points” before the third week. Bernal stressed that he believes he and his team can make up time on “the long climbs”.

We mustn’t count out Egan. Last year, he proved that he could win the Tour de France without so many long climbs. This year’s Tour takes place exclusively in France, which is why Bernal remains confident.

Tour de France lasts for most of September

Not counting Stage 5, check out the current top ten at the 2020 Tour de France. We added the seconds each cyclist is behind the leader.

Bernal, Pogacar, and Roglic look solid to jump into the top three spots by the end of the second week. They might start the second week in the top three spots.

Watch out for Egan Bernal. Again, he won last year without so many mountain races. Bernal will make up time. So will Nairo Quintana. Nairo excels on long climbs. So, he should make a run into the top five in week two or week three.

Have a great rest of your week!

Nairo Quintana – 3 hills and 8 mountainous stages should set up the 2020 Tour de France for Arkea-Samsic rider Nairo Quintana. Nairo excels on climbs, which makes him the top play to win the trophy this year.
Primoz Roglic – Like Nairo, Primoz is an excellent climber. He’d be our top choice, but he crashed at the Criterium du Dauphine. The crash knocked him from the yellow jersey. If he’s gotten over the crash, he could prove difficult to beat.
Egan Bernal – The defending champion, Bernal is just 23-years-old. The key for Egan at this year’s Tour de France is to race smartly. Bernal rides for Team Ineos Grenadiers. They’re the most experienced Tour de France team in the world.
Tadej Pogacar – The 21-year-old Pogacar won 3 stages at the Vuelta a Espana. He also finished second at the Criterium du Dauphine. Although some claim he’s too young to win the Tour, he’s a smart rider. If he’s improved his climbing, he could put fear into Primoz and Nairo.
Thibaut Pinot – Thibaut suffered an injury at the 2019 Tour de France. If he hadn’t, he may have challenged Bernal for the championship. Pinot, like everyone on this list, can excel on long climbs. If he’s ready, he’ll make his presence felt. Whether it will be enough to win is anybody’s guess.
