Betting Vuelta a Espana Race

After three stages at the Vuelta a Espana, a shock red jersey leader has emerged.

There’s plenty of racing left, though, which means the man that wears the red jersey heading into the fifth stage isn’t likely to be the man to wear the red jersey heading into the final stages.

Check out the latest in the final Grand Tour cycling event of the year.

Writer’s Picks for the Vuelta a Espana Upsets

Wout van Aert Has the Lead After Stage 3

Visma-Lease a Bike cyclist Wout Van Aert wears the red jersey after 3 stages.

van Aert, who cycles for the same team as two time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, is taking advantage of the climbing stages.

Most don’t believe Aert, who was a big time underdog heading into the La Vuelta, is going to hang on and keep the red jersey on his back.

It’s a matter of time before the other cyclists catch up to Aert.

Who Will Overtake Aert and Wear the Red Jersey?

Once the race shifts, Aert’s power driving style is going to wear thin quickly.

Visma-Lease a Bike knows this, which is why Aert appears to be setting things up for Sepp Kuss, the 2023 winner, or Edoardo Affini.

Kuss has yet to break into the top ten.

But at the 2023 Vuelta, the defending champ in this year’s event didn’t make his move until Stage 8.

There’s plenty of time for Kuss to get into the race.

Affini could be in line for a boost because after the third stage, he’s in fifth place.

More than likely, Visma is hoping Affini and van Aert set the table for Kuss to take charge around Stage 8 Stage 10 and like 2023 never look back.

Primoz Roglic and Jao Almeida

Favorite Primoz Roglic and Jao Almeida are lurking.

UAE Team Emirates hopes Almeida pushes the pedals starting around Stage 6.

The pre-race +800 favorite is in ninth place just 32 minutes behind van Aert.

For sure, Almeida could get it done from there.

Roglic is in a better position than Almeida.

The Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe cyclist is 30 minutes behind Almeida.

30 minutes after Stage 3 is nothing for Roglic.

Primoz won the Vuelta in straight years from 2019 through 2021.

He knows the race better than any cyclist in history.

Once cycling odds update, Roglic should be more of a favorite than he was before the race began.

Almeida is likely to be second choice while Sepp Kruss will be third or fourth choice.

Almeida could present the value play, but beating Roglic is going to be difficult.

2024 Vuelta a Espana Opening Odds

Primoz Roglic +150

Enric Mas Nicolau +700
Adam Yates +700
Jao Almeida +800
Sepp Kuss +900
Daniel Martinez +1200
