Emmy Awards for Supporting Actor & Actress Comedy Series Odds Analysis

On September 19, Hollywood hands out golden statues to the best in television entertainment. The 2021 Emmy Awards should be a celebration of fantastic performances. In this blog, we make picks for the top supporting thespian performances in the comedy category. As one might expect Ted Lasso shows the most nominations. Saturday Night Live, surprisingly, shows the second most nominations. Which actor and which actress will grab the award? Check out our top pick and second pick along with the Emmy Award odds for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series.

Odds Breakdown for the 2021 Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Comedy Series Emmy Award

2021 Emmy Awards

  • When: Sep. 19, 2021
  • TV / Streaming: CBS / Paramount+

Best Supporting Actor Comedy Series

  • Kenan Thompson – Saturday Night Live +150
  • Jeremy Swift – Ted Lasso +250
  • Bowen Yang – Saturday Night Live +300
  • Brett Goldstein – Ted Lasso +350
  • Nick Mohammed – Ted Lasso +1000
  • Brendan Hunt – Ted Lasso +1200
  • Carl Clemons – Hacks +1400
  • Paul Reiser – The Kominsky Methods +1500

The odds on Kenan reflect the fact that many don’t believe he wins Best Actor for his show Kenan. But although Jason Sudekis should win for Best Actor, it doesn’t mean Emmy voters will hand Thompson the golden statue.

The Ted Lasso folks should split voters. Both Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift are great, but neither figures to grab the top prize, which means our top Emmy pick is Bowen Yang.

The Brisbane born actor is hilarious. He brings a new element to Saturday Night Live and should be rewarded for it.

Carl Clemons is our second pick. The film and stage actor is fantastic as Deborah Vance’s Chief Operating Officer. He has a much better chance of pulling off the upset than the +1400 odds indicate.

Top Emmy Pick: Bowen Yang

Top Second Emmy Pick: Carl Clemons

Best Supporting Actress Comedy Series

  • Hannah Waddingham – Ted Lasso -900
  • Hannah Einbinder – Hacks +600
  • Rosie Perez – The Flight Attendant +1000
  • Juno Temple – Ted Lasso +1000
  • Cecily Strong – Saturday Night Live +1200
  • Aidy Bryant – Saturday Night Live +1800
  • Kate McKinnon – Saturday Night Live +1800

Waddingham is great as Rebecca Welton, the AFC Richmond owner who first wants to ruin the soccer team she got via a divorce settlement, but eventually wants to win. But as good as Waddingham is, the odds make her an underlay.

How can Emmy voters look past Hannah Einbinder? She’s the Gen Z writer that Jean Smart’s character, Deborah Vance, hires. Einbinder’s character, Ava Daniels, can’t find work in Hollywood after she got canceled due to an insensitive tweet. Hacks only works because Smart and Einbinder have awesome chemistry.

It’s difficult to separate the Saturday Night Live nominees, they’re all deserving. Since the SNL nominees figure to split the vote, we’re going with Juno Temple from Ted Lasso. We’re not as sure as everyone else that Lasso sweeps on Sep. 19.

So voters may want to reward Ted Lasso by handing out a secondary award. Also, like everyone in the Apple+ hit, Juno Temple is great.

Top Emmy Pick: Hannah Einbinder

Top Second Emmy Pick: Juno Temple
