Sam Mendes’ World War I drama ‘1917’ won over both, critics and audiences and finished second in nominations with 10. According to expert film industry insiders, it’s a virtual lock to win best picture. 1917 also won Best Picture at the Producers Guild Awards, which commonly is one of the strongest statements for a film heading into the Oscars.

Kwak Sin-ae and Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite is the first South Korean film to be nominated for any award. This flick dominated the international film circuit and will get its share of votes. Todd Phillips’ Joker” leads all films with 11 nominations and although it’s not a real contender for best film, Joaquin Phoenix is expected to win the Best Actor award.

  • Leonardo Dicaprio +2000

There’s no doubt that Joaquin Phoenix’s performance of the Joker will take the win. That doesn’t mean the other contenders performances were not worthy of it. They totally are. But the depth of Phoenix’s interpretation of the Gotham City villain is one that will be revisited for the rest of time. He’s one all the other awards he’s been nominated for. This should be the same.

Odds To Win Best Director

  • Sam Mendes -500
  • Bong Joon Ho +200
  • Quentin Tarantino +900
  • Martin Scorsese +2000
  • Todd Phillips +4500

Martin Scorsese is one of the most legendary directors of all-time and he won an Oscar for directing 2006’s Best Picture winner “The Departed.” However, this year, , it’s Sam Mendes for “1917” and Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite” who are the front runners in what looks like a two-person race.

10-time nominee “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” is expected to take home three Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Original Screenplay and Best Production Design while many are predicting that another film with 10 nominations, “The Irishman,” could go home empty-handed.  A year ago, all eight of the Best Picture contenders won at least one award. In 2018, two of the nine Best Picture nominees went home without winning anything and in 2017, three of the nine films up for Bet Film left empty-handed.
