Minari is a lock. The main reason the Globes didn’t send Minari a Best Picture nomination is so they could give it the Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie, about South Korean immigrants living in the American South in the 1980’s, has garnered some of the best reviews of the year. If the -110 odds hold, it’s an overlay.

It’s impossible not to give the award to Chloe Zhao. She’s a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and producer who makes amazing movies about Americans. Her stories cross cultural and racial lines because she makes movies about people without labels. They’re just people. Nomadland is her best film yet.

- Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit) +200
- Anya Taylor Joy (Emma) +450

- Kate Hudson (Music) +800
If Maria Bakalova wins, it wouldn’t surprise us. But Michelle Pfeiffer gives a fantastic performance as a socialite about to blow all of her money who calls up her son and moves in with him in his French apartment that he shares with his cat. Who doesn’t want to bet on French Exit after reading that?

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical / Comedy
- Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Movie Film) -200
- Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) +300
- Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield) +600
- Andy Samberg (Palm Springs) +700
- James Corden (The Prom) +700
Borat could win for sure. But Sacha’s comedy doesn’t play well to everyone. Hamilton is a rehash of the much better stage production. Heck, it’s a filmed version of the stage production. We still don’t understand what the fuss is about. Andy Samberg was great in Palm Springs. He’s a comedic genius that deserves to finally get a nod.

Best Motion Picture – Musical / Comedy

We’re taking a shot on Palm Springs. Yes, Hamilton has the pedigree, Borat is Borat, and The Prom had all of those stars. But Palm Springs is a hilarious, small movie, and often those are the best comedies.

Hopkins and Oldman have won their fair share. Riz Ahmed is great and Sound of Metal is an underrated movie. Chadwick Boseman provides the best performance of any actor this year, though.

- Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) +1000
This is a tough call. Viola Davis is unreal as Ma Rainey. Frances McDormand provides one of the most heartfelt performances, maybe, ever as a homeless nomad moving around the U.S. Nomadland had such an impact that it’s really difficult to look past McDormand. But Viola Davis is the best thespian on the planet, and she provides one of her best performances ever. So we’re going with Viola.

Nomadland takes this for sure. If -200 holds, we’re getting overlay odds. The Father, Promising Young Woman, Mank, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are all great movies. Nomadland talks about what’s happening today, as we speak, to many Americans.
Chloe Zhao’s movie isn’t about culture, race, or ethnicity. It’s about the income gap in the U.S. The one thing that could take down the United States. The only thing, probably. That’s how important of a film Nomadland is.
