93rd Academy Awards Best Director Odds

  • David Fincher – Mank -200
  • Stephen Spielberg – Westside Story +150
  • Ridley Scott – The Last Duel +700
  • Sofia Coppola – On the Rocks +700
  • Aaron Sorkin – The Trial of the Chicago 7 +900

Expect odds to change and MyBookie to add more betting options

MyBookie, no doubt, will change odds for the Academy Award for Best Director. For starters, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment has decided to push West Side Story to 2021. Spielberg wants people to watch Westside Story in theatres. A 2021 release date makes much more sense to accomplish that.

The Last Duel¸ Ridley Scott’s film, is another that won’t release until 2021, thereby, disqualifying Scott to win the Academy Award at next year’s ceremony. Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 are both 2020 releases, though. Academy voters can watch On the Rocks on Apple+. They can view The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix.

Both Coppola and Sorkin could get nominations. The top two contenders to replace Spielberg and Scott are Regina King for One Night in Miami and Chloe Zhao for Nomadland

Even Zaho and King enter the race, is David Fincher for Mank worth a play at -200?

David Fincher has gotten two Best Director nominations before, in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and in 2011 for The Social Network. Most felt he should have won for directing The Social Network.

He didn’t. Now, many feel he should win for directing Mank. No doubt, Fincher deserves to win, but Chloa Zhao’s film, Nomadland, and Regina King’s movie are getting a ton of Oscar buzz. Not only that, but post-Trump, it feels as if the Academy will take a breather from awarding a story about Hollywood, Mank is about a screenwriter, and instead look to award a director with a slightly more universal story.

That doesn’t mean Fincher won’t win. It just means the odds are much too low considering the competition.
