Ammonite to be nominated for Best Picture

  • No -200
  • Yes +150

Although COVID forced every major film studio to get into streaming in 2020, that doesn’t mean the year lacked top movies. In fact, more than a few great movies released this year. Some of those films, like Nomadland, One Night in Miami, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom are social conscience films. Ammonite isn’t much of one compared to those three contenders. So, no, Ammonite won’t get a Best Picture nod.

Dune nominated for Best Picture

  • No -130
  • Yes -110

Dune looks fantastic. But in the Year of COVID, smaller films have a much better shot of getting a Best Picture nod than a film that cost a bunch of money and was based on an old, although great, science fiction novel. There aren’t enough spots for the desert space opera.

Foreign language film nominated for Best Picture

  • Yes -250
  • No +170

In 2020, Parasite was the first foreign language film to take home the Best Picture Oscar. Although there are plenty of foreign language films that came out this year, there are way too many qualified films from the U.S. for a foreign language movie to get into the Top 10. It makes sense to take the decent odds on No.

Same film to win both Best Director and Best Picture

  • Yes +140
  • No -180

The Best Director and Best Picture awards used to go hand-in-hand. That’s not the case anymore. The reason could be because unlike Best Picture, where there can be up to 10 nominees, only 5 are nominated for Best Director. This year, two of the five nominees should be Chloe Zhao for Nomadland and Regina King for One Night in Miami. One or both are favorites, but it’s difficult to know for sure if either Chloe’s or Regina’s film wins Best Picture. Back No.

Tenet nominated for best picture

  • Yes -125
  • No -115

A few weeks ago, Tenet looked like a shoo-in. But since then, One Night in Miami, Nomadland, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, where Chadwick Boseman provides his final acting performance, have gotten a lot of buzz. Tenet, like Dune and Ammonite, could be crossing fingers for minor awards on April 25 and that’s it.
