93rd Academy Awards

  • When: April 25, 2021
  • Where: Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, CA

93rd Academy Awards Best Supporting Actor

  • Daniel Kaluuya – Judas & the Black Messiah -450
  • Sacha Baron Cohen – The Trial of the Chicago 7 +350
  • Leslie Odom Jr. – One Night in Miami +1100
  • Paul Raci – Sound of Metal +2000
  • Lakeith Standfield – Judas & the Black Messiah +2800

Based on what’s already happened, Kaluuya is a lock. The British actor plays Fred Hampton in Judas & the Black Messiah, one of the most riveting movies of the year. Kaluuya deserves the award over his prime competition, Sacha Baron Cohen in The Trial of the Chicago 7. But Kaluuya probably should have gotten the nom for Best Actor and not Best Supporting Actor.

Although he shares a lot of screen time with fellow supporting actor nominee Lakeith Standfield, Kaluuya is the main character. He deserves the win and he probably will win. It will be a win in the wrong category, though.

Leslie Odom Jr. is great as Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami and if the Academy had nominated Daniel Kaluuya for Best Actor, Lakeith Standfield might be the chalk, but the best underdog choice is Paul Raci.

Raci’s performance as Joe, the person who helps Riz Ahmed’s character Ruben deal with hearing loss, is brilliant. It’s understated and quiet. Sometimes, the Academy hands golden eunuchs to performances like that.

Academy Award Pick: Daniel Kaluuya

Academy Award Underdog Pick: Paul Raci

93rd Academy Awards Best Supporting Actor

  • Maria Bakalova – Borat Subsequent Moviefilm +100
  • Youn Yuh-Jung – Minari  +200
  • Glenn Close – Hillbilly Elegy +400
  • Olivia Coleman – The Father +800
  • Amanda Seyfried – Mank +1000

Maria Bakalova is terrific, and the Academy often awards comedic roles with supporting Oscars. But it’s impossible to look past Youn Yuh-Jung in Minari. The elder actress is perfect in her role as Soonja, the grandmother of the immigrant Korean family that moves to the U.S. in director Lee Isaac Chung’s awesome movie. They should call Yuh-Jung’s name on April 25.

After Bakalova and Yuh-Jung, Glenn Close, Olivia Coleman, and Amanda Seyfried offer underdog qualifying odds. All three provided performances worthy of the statue.

Glenn Close gives a terrific performance. Olivia Coleman is awesome in The Father. But of the three, the most memorable is Amanda Seyfried as silent era and early thirties comedic actress Marion Davies in Mank. Seyfried is the underdog pick.

Academy Award Pick: Youn Yuh-Jung

Academy Award Underdog Pick: Amanda Seyfried
