A Closer Look At The Analysis Highlights 2017 Academy Awards Odds And Predictions

Best Picture

“La La Land” -1000 “Moonlight” +550 “Manchester by the Sea” +1600 “Arrival” +8000 “Lion” –+8000 “Fences” +8000 “Hell or High Water” +8000 “Hacksaw Ridge” +8000 “Hidden Figures” +1300 Analysis: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star as two wannabe dreamers trying to make it in Los Angeles. This film has already bagged an impressive sixteen gongs this awards season including a whopping seven Golden Globes. This musical film is a throwback to the era that made both, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers legends. Prediction: La La Land

Odds to win Best Actor

Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) -200 Denzel Washington (Fences) Even Ryan Gosling (La La Land) +1600 Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) +3300 Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) +10000 Analysis: Casey Affleck might be the favorite to win the best actor award, but my vote goes to the now, legendary Denzel Washington for his role in Fences which tells the story of a failed baseball player who faces discrimination as a rubbish collector in the 1950s. If Washington wins his third acting Oscar, he will become one of just six actors in history that have ever won more than two – joining the likes of legends like Katherine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson. Prediction: Denzel Washington

Odds to win Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) -1200 Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) +800 Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) +1300 Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) +1300 Dev Patel (Lion) +1600 Analysis: Dev Patel may face the longest odds in winning the best supporting actor award, but I believe he should win it and he’s my pick to do just that. In the film ‘Lion’ Patel plays Saroo Brierley, who was separated from his family at the age of 5 and, 25 years later, uses Google Earth to track down his birth mother in India. Dev, lest anyone forget, was launched into superstardom for his role in Slumdog Millionaire. Prediction: Dev Patel

Odds to win Best Actress

Emma Stone (La La Land) -600 Natalie Portman (Jackie) +330 Isabelle Huppert (Elle )+800 Ruth Negga (Loving) +4000 Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) +5500 Analysis: Emma Stone gets my vote here for her role in La La Land. Stone actually wowed with her singing in the film in the role of Mia, a wannabe actor who never quite gets the break. Prediction: Emma Stone

Odds to win Best Supporting Actress

Viola Davis (Fences) -3000 Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) +800 Naomie Harris (Moonlight) +1300 Nicole Kidman (Lion) +3300 Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) +5500 Analysis: Michelle Williams earned her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in Manchester by the Sea after having previously been nominated for Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine and My Week with Marilyn. In the film Williams plays Randi, whose estranged husband returns to their home town with his nephew following the sudden death of his brother. I would have gone with the favored Viola Davis here, but seeing as how she won ton of awards a year ago and Williams is due, the Manchester by the Sea star is my pick. Prediction: Michelle Williams
