Over the weekend, the movies return to glory continued. Black Widow, the Scarlett Johansson standalone Marvel film about one of the Avengers most famous characters, dominated at the box office. On Friday, July 16, LeBron and Bugs Bunny hope for more movie magic and the Suicide Squad is shaping up as Warner Bros best DC movie ever. Check out how much Black Widow made at the box office, our thoughts on whether LeBron pulls an MJ in space, and if the Suicide Squad turns out to be as fantastic as the trailers imply. Let’s jump right into action so you can keep betting against MyBookie’s Entertainment odds.
Black Widow’s Performance Commands the Box Office
Does Black Widow’s performance mean movies are back?
Black Widow made an impressive $80 million in its opening weekend. The film has made an additional $78 million internationally, which means that since it’s U.S. open, Black Widow has scored $215 million at the box office.
Does Black Widow’s performance mean movies are back? Yes, but movies came back on June 25 when F9 hit U.S. theatres.
The ninth film in the Fast and Furious franchise made $70 million it’s opening weekend even though only 80% of the movie theatres in the U.S. were open. The 80% number rose between F9’s June 25 opening and Black Widow’s July 9 U.S. start.
Both film’s performance bodes well for Suicide Squad in early August and the latest Jordan Peele horror film, Candyman, a sequel to the 90’s hit, which opens on August 27. Also, Hotel Transylvania 4 opens on July 23.
Is LeBron as popular as Michael Jordan? Space Jam 2 will provide the answer!
LeBron James hopes he can score Air Jordan magic when he steps onto the basketball court with Bugs, Daffy, and the rest in Space Jam 2. So far, buzz for Space Jam 2 hasn’t come close to approaching that of the first Space Jam.
The first Space Jam came out at the height of MJ’s popularity. Space Jam uno came out in 1996, the year Jordan’s Chicago Bulls took the title. The Bulls would also win the championship in 1997 and 1998, completing the second three-peat of Jordan’s career.
Space Jam 2 comes out in a season where we got to see LeBron bow out of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns in the first round. It also comes out a year after COVID.
Not only that, but LeBron is an outspoken individual. He tweets whatever he feels like, says whatever he wants, and has no fear. There’s nothing wrong with that.
But being a sports star is different than carrying a movie. So we will have to wait and see if LeBron’s popularity as a basketball player translates to the screen.
The Suicide Squad on August 6 could be the DC Movie Warner Bros. has been clamoring for
The first Suicide Squad came out in 2016. Warner Brothers was so disappointed that five years later, they’re rebooting the franchise. This time, WB and DC brought in heavy hitters Idris Elba and the best thespian in the world, Viola Davis.
That alone should make Suicide Squad the best comic book movie with DC characters Warner Bros. has ever created. What will also hope is the face James Gunn, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy, is at the helm.
Expect Suicide Squad to be fantastic. Also, expect it to make more money than Black Widow because Elba and Davis will draw plenty of fans.
