2021 Emmy Award Odds Rundown

2021 Emmy Awards

  • When: Sep. 19, 2021
  • TV / Streaming: CBS / Paramount+

Based on the odds, which drama and which comedy should sweep the Emmy’s?

No doubt, The Crown, Netflix’s drama about Queen Elizabeth II, the current Monarch of Great Britain, should sweep this year’s drama categories. In 2020, The Crown added Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.

Anderson is -2000 to win Best Supporting Actress Emmy. Both Emma Corrin, who plays Princess Diana, and Oliva Coleman, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, are nominated for Best Actress. Coleman offers +1000 odds. Corrin is the chalk at -600.

Josh O’Connor is the -150 chalk to win Best Actor in a drama series while The Crown is -1000 to win Best Drama.

Apple TV’s Ted Lasso could sweep the comedy awards. Lasso is a television show about a football coach who becomes the HC of a London soccer club in England’s top flight footy league.

Jason Sudekis, who plays Ted Lasso, is -2000 to win Best Lead Actor Comedy Series. The series is at -1200 to win the Emmy.

What possible underdog plays exist in the comedy categories?

The Jean Smart vehicle Hacks could surprise in the comedy categories. Smart is a -800 favorite to win Best Lead Actress Comedy Series.

Hacks is second choice at +700 to upset Ted Lasso and win for Best Comedy. The +1000 odds on The Flight Attendant means the Kelly Cuoco show has an outside chance. Cuoco is at +400, second choice, to upset Smart.

A major longshot possibility is the incredibly well-written Pen15. Creators Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine play themselves in middle school. Pen15 has a massive fan base, which could translate to a huge upset at +1500.

Cobra Kai  is at +2000. During 2020, no show provided more heartfelt moments than the continuing saga of Johnny and Danny from the Karate Kid movies in the 1980s. So if nostalgia wins out, Cobra Kai could also take the top prize.

What possible underdog plays exist in the drama categories?

Based on the odds, The Crown is a lock to win Best Drama. But before dumping on the Netflix show, check out the odds on The Handmaid’s Tale, +600, and Bridgerton, +1200.

Don’t discount Bridgerton. Last year, it was Netflix’s top watched program. Not only that, but Shonda Rhimes, who created Scandal and produced How to Get Away With Murder, is behind the period piece.

Billy Porter, nominated for Pose, is second-choice to win Best Actor Drama. But if you want to beat O’Connor, consider Rege-Jean Page in Bridgerton. The star of the show, Page won’t appear in subsequent seasons.

Emmy voters may want to award Page when they can. MJ Rodriguez in Pose and Elisabeth Moss in The Handmaid’s Tale could upset Emma Corrin in The Crown. It depends on how Emmy voters are feeling about the Royal Family once they lay down their votes.
