LoL LEC 2021 Spring Playoffs Betting Preview

Fnatic Vs SK Gaming – Friday, March 26 – 18:00 CET

Fnatic finished the LEC Spring regular season outside of top-four for the first time since EU LCS 2016, which only further confirmed many people’s fears that Fnatic won’t be the same powerhouse they were with Martin “Rekkles” Larsson. Regardless of their mediocre finish, we have to take into account that Fnatic have changed their coach and added two new players, which has resulted in some growing pains and consequently subpar performances.

In addition to that, some of Fnatic’s players and staff were reportedly struggling with sickness towards the end of the split, which might help explain their 0-3 run in the final week of the season. Outside of that, Fnatic have also changed their playstyle quite drastically and have now become a very aggressive and volatile team.

This trait has earned Fnatic a couple of very dominant wins, but also disappointing losses during the regular season, which is why it’s hard to say how well will they perform in a best-of-three (Bo3) series, where consistency is the key to victory.

SK have been playing well above the expectations this split and have shocked many by finishing inside the top-six. That said, they haven’t looked too sharp towards the end of the season, having lost five games in a row.

SK’s biggest weakness and the main reason why they struggled so much is their poor early-game. In many of their losses, SK fell behind early and were unable to come back, however, they have usually done more than fine in games where they came out of the early-game relatively even.

Since SK look more organized, I can imagine a world where they upset Fnatic and eliminate them from the playoffs, however, there is one big concern with this scenario – SK’s biggest weakness is Fnatic’s biggest strength. Fnatic are as of now one of the most dominant early-game teams in the world, essentially making this match a stylistic nightmare for SK. Take Fnatic to win with at least two maps to spare.

Prediction: Fnatic -1.5 maps

Value: Fnatic -2.5 maps

G2 Esports Vs Schalke 04 – Saturday, March 27 – 17:00 CET

G2 Esports are the most successful LEC team in history, having won eight titles across the last five years. Although the historical record of teams don’t mean much in the larger picture, it’s important to note that the core of this team has won four back-to-back titles with relative ease.

Although G2 have made a rather big roster change during the offseason, the signing of Martin “Rekkles” Larsson has arguably made this team stronger, which in theory means we are looking at the strongest LoL team Europe has ever produced. And I’m saying “in theory” largely because G2 have yet to show that side of them.

Schalke 04 did not need a “miracle run” this season to earn their spot in the playoffs and have looked quite impressive – outside of their seven-game losing streak in Weeks 4-7. This team have proven they can be one of the best in Europe and on their day defeat anyone who stands in their path.

Schalke 04 are the only team in LEC that have beaten each of the “Big Three” teams at least once, which tells a lot about how good they can be. The problem, however, is that S04 are a very momentum-driven team, meaning that they can be unstoppable when they get their wheels spinning, but tend to underperform severely when they aren’t on a hot streak.

Although I wouldn’t want to underestimate Schalke 04, they’re clearly weaker than G2, who tend to shift into a higher gear once playoffs roll around. While G2 have won the regular season, I can’t help but feel like we haven’t seen them play to the best of their ability just yet, which is quite a scary thought if you’re any other team in the league.

Since G2 can have their slip-ups, I will give Schalke 04 the benefit of the doubt and say they can steal one map, but ultimately, G2’s superior individual quality should shine through here.

Prediction: Over 3.5 maps

Prediction: G2 Esports to win 3-1
