Dota 2 is an online battle arena type of game and has leagues dotted all over the world. With professional sports starting to return to Germany, it’s perhaps no real surprise that we would see the inaugural season of a new league start there, too. The League Format

Given that this is the first season of the Dota 2 ESL Meisterschaft, qualifiers were held to determine which teams would get in. There were 3 open qualifiers held, from which 2 teams came from each. There was also a closed qualifier, which delivered teams into the league. All told, there are 12 teams split into 2 groups of 6.

The teams in each group will play a double round robin, which essentially means that they play each other twice over the course of the group stage. The matches will be played in a best of 2 format, so there is the possibility of ties happening in the group stage.

Each of the group winners automatically make the playoffs, where they will be placed in the semi-finals. The 2nd and 3rd place teams in each of the groups will go into the quarterfinals, where they will play for a shot at moving on. All other teams will be eliminated. The regular season is spilt into 10 Matchdays, running from May 19 to July 21.

The total prize pool will be €26,700, with €10,000 going to the winner.

An Introduction to Group B

Matchday 1 for Group B will be held on May 20 and 21, with 3 games set to be played over the course of those two days. Since the league is new, it is going to be tough to handicap these games until we get a look at each team.  Still, we can give you a brief introduction of the 6 teams that make up Group B, with some details on how they made it into the league.

5Upjungz were one of the 6 teams that made it in through the closed qualifier, as were hehe United. Kolossus went a different route, as they made it out of open qualifier #1. Playing Ducks had to go through open qualifier #2, while Recast Gaming got in from open qualifier #2. Group B also has Team Destiny, who played their way in via the closed qualifier.
