LoL Championship Series 2021 Summer Betting Preview

TSM vs Golden Guardians

  • When: Saturday, July 24th – 14:00 PDT

TSM enter the penultimate week of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) 2021 Summer regular season with a 26-13 record on the 2021 season and a 14-7 record on the split. Golden Guardians are at only 12-27 on the season, but 9-12 on the summer split, with an impressive run of 4-2 across the last two round robins.

Golden Guardians’ improvement on the summer split was remarkable, to say the least, and they continue to impress the league with their performances on the Rift. Although GG’s roster is assembled mostly of rookies, that hasn’t stopped them from beating some of the toughest teams in the league.

At first, it seemed like GG’s wins were flukes, but it soon became evident that this is actually a good team. It’s also worth noting that GG rank as one of the top-four teams in the LCS across almost all metrics.

TSM are a much more stacked roster and one of the main candidates to win the title. But as it’s the case with any betting, betting odds are far more important than the perceived strength of the team.

TSM will obviously win this match more times than not, but that doesn’t explain why Golden Guardians are priced as high as +225 on most eSports bookmakers. TSM are strong, but we have seen GG defeat even stronger teams before, so they definitely have a fighting chance here.

Their win probability becomes that much higher if we take into account that TSM are known for throwing away their leads and making very questionable late-game calls.

GG are an excellent underdog pick for this match. Alternatively, you could look for a kill handicap bet (+7.5 kills) since TSM’s games are generally very low scoring.

Prediction: Golden Guardians to win

Alternative prediction: Golden Guardians +7.5 kills

Team Liquid vs Dignitas

  • When: Saturday, July 24th – 17:00 PDT

This is another game where we have a big favorite (Team Liquid) taking on an underdog. And like it is the case in the TSM vs. Golden Guardians match, you could make a strong case for the outsiders.

Dignitas are a mid-table team with a 19-20 record on the 2021 season and 8-13 on the summer split. Team Liquid are the reigning LCS 2021 Spring finalists, albeit with a poor 23-16 record on the season and 11-10 on the LCS 2021 Summer.

Liquid are still holding a positive win rate, but their performances on the season weren’t too convincing. Early into the season, Liquid were struggling with some internal drama, and it seems like something isn’t clicking in the team once more.

They’re 1-3 in their last four outings. That run includes losses to Golden Guardians, 100 Thieves, and TSM, and only one win against Counter Logic Gaming, who are the undisputed worst team in the league.

Not only do Liquid look very iffy on the Summoner’s Rift, but you can also clearly see that the players are frustrated with their subpar showings, which doesn’t help the morale one bit. Based on their showings, you can easily rank Liquid as a sixth-best team in the league – behind Golden Guardians, Evil Geniuses, Cloud9, TSM, and 100T.

Dignitas’s metrics rank them as the seventh-best team in the league currently, which seems about fair. You could make a case for Immortals to take their spot, but it would all come down to how much you value Immortals’ recent slump in form.

Liquid are 4-0 against Dignitas on the season and have already beaten Dignitas twice on the summer split, most recently on July 10th. However, they have since started showing cracks and will likely not be as efficient in their fifth and final regular-season meeting.

We wouldn’t bet on Dignitas to upset Liquid since they are still a bit shaky with their mid-late game execution. That said, Liquid are – like TSM – a slow and low-scoring team, so it’s definitely worth exploring a kill handicap bet on Dignitas for Saturday’s bout.

Prediction: Dignitas +7.5 kills
