Most seasons in sports tend to be long and drawn out, but that is not the case with eSports. There is always some action to tune into and wager on, with the Overwatch Contenders competition one that is particularly exciting. The Contenders series is spread across 7 different global regions, with each of them playing a new event each week. The action comes thick and fast, with the group stages very quickly followed by the playoffs before moving on to the next week. In Korea, things are a little different, as they basically go playoffs from the start, with a round of 12 as the opener. They are currently in Week 4, with the semi-finals set to be played in the early hours of Thursday, May 21. We are going to take a look at the matches to come, while breaking down how each of the 4 teams got there along with their Overwatch odds, so let’s get right to it.
Overwatch Contenders KR May 21st Matches
RunAway Vs O2 Blast
RunAway have made this look very easy from the start and have yet to drop a single game in the best of 5 series that they have played in these playoffs. They started out in the Round of 12 with a 3-0 win over Meta Athena, a result that they repeated against Battlica in the quarterfinals. That is an impressive run that they will look to keep going on Thursday morning. In Week 1 of the OW Contenders series, they went down 3-1 in the quarterfinals, while Week 2 was more like the current contest. RunAway made it all the way to the semi-finals there, but they were beaten 3-0 by O2 Blast in that one. They went out in the quarterfinals in Week 3. O2 Blast have also had a smooth run into the semi-finals and will be looking to get one step closer to the $10,000 cash prize for first with a win here. They fell in the quarterfinals in Week 1, going down 3-2 to T1, the eventual winners that week. They hit the big time in Week 2, cruising all the way to the final, where they blew out Top Honor 3-0. They had another good run in Week 3, making it to the semi-finals before losing 3-1 to Battlica, who went on to win it.
Pick: I think Blast O2 look like the clear favorite here.
WGS Phoenix Vs Lucky Future
WGS blew through the Round of 12 with a comfortable 3-0 win over T1, but they were made to work for it in the quarterfinals, beating Element Mystic 3-2 in the best of 5. The win over T1 was sweet revenge after losing to them in the final in Week 1. In Week 2, they were stopped in the quarterfinals by RunAway in another 3-2 thriller. It was also a quarterfinal exit in Week 3, so they are very much ahead of the game here.
Lucky Future has dropped just 1 game on their way to the semi-finals, so they are very much a team in form. They made it to the quarterfinal in Week 1, getting blown out by Element Mystic in that one. Lucky Future ended up in the money in Week 2, getting to the semi-finals before losing to Top Honor. They were unfortunate to be stopped at the quarterfinals in Week 3, losing 3-2 to Battlica in that one.
Pick: This looks like an even match-up, but I am leaning towards Lucky Future.
