The Basics of the Overwatch League
As the name suggests, the Overwatch League features teams going head to head in the Overwatch video game, a colorful first-person team shooter. Each of the 6-player teams choose from 30 different heroes, split between class, as they try to create a team that will overpower their opponent. The league hosts the game on their own server and are continually adding new elements to help make each new round as fresh as possible.
The League is broken down into 2 conferences – Atlantic and Pacific – and also features a playoff at the end of the season, which will help make the format very familiar for fans of pro sports. This season, the 3rd for the Overwatch League, the goal was to create a home and away format for the league, but the current coronavirus situation means that all future games will be played online until the situation has been resolved.
Overwatch League Schedule and Standings
The schedule is a little bit up in the air at the moment as the Overwatch League scrambles to turn the league into an online event for the foreseeable future. That said, there have been some games played, so we can take a look at the standings as they are now.
- Atlantic Conference – We have a good deal more to go on here given that each team in this conference has played 4-7 games each versus just 2-3 in the Pacific, which we will get into in a moment. As it stands now, it is the New York Excelsior and the Philadelphia Fusion who are leading the way with 5-1 records. The Fusion were actually the runner-up in the championship in the inaugural season
- Pacific Conference – With the majority of the teams in this conference based in Asia, those matches were among the first to get shut down when COVID-19 first hit. The Seoul Dynasty and the Vancouver Titans, last season’s runner-up, are tied at the top with a 2-0 record, while the defending champion San Francisco Shock are second from bottom at 1-2.
