Discover the current odds for the Belmont Stakes and unravel the probabilities surrounding the question of whether the favorite will clinch victory after the Preakness. The 2024 Preakness Stakes is in the books. Soon to turn 89, D. Wayne Lukas became the oldest horse racing trainer in history when he saddled Seize the Grey to an upset victory over Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
Seize the Grey and Mystik Dan now point to the Belmont Stakes at 1 ¼ miles in three weeks. This year’s Belmont Stakes takes place at Saratoga, which is why it is at 1 ¼ miles instead of the usual 1 ½.

Mystik Dan, Seize the Grey, or Sierra Leone will be the favorite to win the 2024 Belmont Stakes
Seize the Grey got an early and easy lead, which is the reason he won the Preakness Stakes. It’s impossible to allow a quality horse to run a quarter mile at Pimlico in over 24 seconds and then hope to catch the frontrunner. That’s what happened on Saturday.
If Mystik Dan had pressured Seize the Grey as soon as the gates opened, the Derby winner likely would have won. Horseplayers know this, which is why Seize the Grey isn’t likely to go off the favorite to win the Belmont.
Mystik Dan has a great shot of going off the chalk to take the Belmont Stakes. The horse showed it’s a true warrior by gamely chasing Seize the Grey. There was no catching the front runner, but like Dan did in the Derby, he kept trying and didn’t throw in the towel.
The other potential favorite to win the Belmont is Chad Brown trained Sierra Leone. The second place finisher in the Derby lost to Mystik Dan by a nose. Not only that, but Seirra Leone is fresh and fresh horses perform well in the final Triple Crown race.
Among the Three, Sierra Leone is the Prediction to Go Off the Chalk
Sierra Leone has numerous advantages going into the Belmont. For starters, the Brown trainee has rested the legs while Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey ran in the Preakness.
Second, Brown has pointed to the Belmont almost immediately after the Derby. When a trainer like Chad Brown points to a race, he often comes through. Finally, Sierra Leone won’t have to navigate through a twenty horse field to win the Belmont. Eight, maybe ten horses will enter the gate. It could be less than eight if Fierceness, which would be the recommendation, doesn’t go.
Mystik Dan will be Second Choice Followed by Seize the Grey
Mystik Dan will go off second choice or first choice. If novice horseplayers bet the Belmont, Mystik Dan might leapfrog Sierra Leone and go off the chalk because he’s the name horse in the event. But if horseplayers who read the racing form bet the Belmont, they’re likely to back Sierra Leone ahead of Mystik Dan due to Leone’s advantages.
Seize the Grey could go off third or fourth choice. The prediction is that Fierceness won’t run in the Belmont, which means many horseplayers will expect Seize the Grey to grab the lead as they break from the gate the same way he did in the Preakness. Lone front runners have won the Belmont in the past plenty of times.
Fourth Choice, and the Possible Sharp Play, will be Catching Freedom
If Seize the Grey goes off third choice, then Catching Freedom will go off fourth choice. The Brad Cox trained runner managed a fourth place finish in the Derby and a third place finish in the Preakness.
Whoever rides Catching Freedom will want to start the run earlier than he did in the Derby. The run in the Preakness was at the right time, but nobody was going to catch Seize the Grey. Sharp horseplayers, due to expected odds most likely, will be all over Catching Freedom should the horse enter.
