Japan will enter the 2022 Qatar World Cup one of the longest shots on the board. But although many believe Japan has no chance, one of these days an underdog squad is going to win the World Cup. Also, just because Japan won’t win the World Cup, it doesn’t mean they have no shot of taking down one of the more heavily favored teams in their group. Check out current FIFA World Cup Odds on the Rising Sun to win the WC along with an analysis and prediction as to whether Japan moves to the knockout stage.

Japan Odds to Win the FIFA Qatar World Cup
- Japan +24000
Japan’s odds make them one of the longest shots on the board to win the World Cup. How high are Japan’s odds to lift the WC trophy?
If you put $100 on Japan to win the World Cup, and the biggest upset in sports history happens, you’d win $24,000. Plus, you’d get back your $100 investment.
On paper, Japan has no chance, which is why you can’t back them. But soccer matches don’t happen on paper. So, in reality, Japan has as much of a shot as Cameroon, Peru, and probably even Canada.
Cameroon and Peru are both at +2000. Canada is at +1600. So if you’re a super longshot player and you’re deciding which team with no chance you want to put some money behind, Japan is a better play than Canada, Cameroon, or Peru.
Why Japan will move to the next round
Many Japanese players step onto the pitch for top UEFA League teams, including 25-year-old Ko Itakura who plays for Manchester City.
Itakura isn’t the only Japanese player that puts on the cleats for an English Premier League team. #10 Takumi Minamino plays for Liverpool and Kaoru Mitoma plays for Brighton. Takehiro Tomiyasu plays for Arsenal.
Overall, Japan shows 13 players that put on a UEFA League squad kit. So although Japan isn’t one of the better World Cup teams, the squad has plenty of UEFA league talent which could help them advance.
Why Japan won’t move to the next round
We’d give Japan a shot if they didn’t play in such a strong group. Group E is loaded.
Costa Rica should beat New Zealand and stamp their World Cup ticket. Los Ticos is a solid club. If Japan manages to beat Costa Rica in group play, they’re still up against it.
The two top teams in Group E are Spain and Germany. Both believe they have the talent to win the World Cup. Spain, especially, seems to have turned it on in recent matches.
Final Analysis – Japan fails to move on from Group E
If New Zealand upsets Costa Rica, the Japanese become the third best team in Group E. It’s asking a lot, though, for the New Zealanders to take down Los Ticos.
Costa Rica looked great in their last match versus the United States. The island nation has a lot of young players. So Japan versus Costa Rica will be a competitive game.
Japan’s matchups versus Spain and Germany shouldn’t be close to being competitive. Spain and Germany will play this World Cup with a chip on their shoulder. Both teams believe they’re being disrespected compared to the press that’s gone to Brazil, France, and England.
Japan is a quality team but the draw did them no favors. The Japanese will be lucky to score a goal, much less get past Spain and Germany while their match with Costa Rica can go either way, which means the Japanese’s World Cup dream ends in the group stage.
