South Korea’s odds make them a massive underdog to break the elite eight stranglehold and win the World Cup. Only eight nations: Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, England, Spain, France, and Italy have won the World Cup.

No other nation, not even Belgium, Portugal, or the Netherlands, has ever lifted the WC trophy. So it goes without saying that to win a World Cup you must be one of the very best soccer countries on the planet.

Is South Korea one of the top soccer nations on the planet? They’re not even close. South Korea has some good individual players. 

But overall, the Koreans should have no shot versus Portugal, Belgium, or the Netherlands, much less against France, England, Brazil, Argentina or Spain. So at their odds, although high, South Korea remains an underlay to win the World Cup.

Why South Korea will move to the next round

South Korea may be due for a huge performance. At no other time in their history will South Korea send more quality players to the pitch then at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Son, Hwang, and Jeong are excellent players and South Korea has very good soccer programs. But the Koreans simply aren’t good enough to challenge the two best teams in their group, Portugal and Uruguay.

Too much pressure on Son, Jeong, and Hwang, means South Korea won’t be able to sustain an attack versus their top Group H opponents.

The problem South Korea has versus Uruguay and Portugal is that those two Group H rivals can go at least two deep at every position. 

South Korea must lean on their top three players to hang with Portugal and Uruguay. But the Portuguese and the Uruguayans can sit their best players, Ronaldo for Portugal and Cavani for Uruguay, and still beat Korea.

Ghana, the fourth team in Group H, also isn’t a bad team. South Korea has some talent. But it’s not enough to finish second in their group. The Koreans play well and can even finish third in Group H. Beating Portugal or Uruguay to stamp a ticket to the knockout stage, though, is asking too much.
