Uruguay Odds to Win the FIFA Qatar World Cup

  • Uruguay +5000

Uruguay used to be the team to beat to win the World Cup. The Uruguayans have made fourteen World Cup appearances. Uruguay won the inaugural WC in 1930.

Uruguay repeated the feat in 1950. Since those two WC wins, it’s been crickets for Uruguay. This year could be different, though.

The reason is because Uruguay has finally moved to younger players. Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez remain important to the team’s chances of lifting the Cup, but if Uruguay advances to the knockout stage it will be because their younger players step it up.

FIFA ranks Uruguay thirteenth in the world. The team shouldn’t win the World Cup this year. But because they are one of eight teams to have ever won a WC, and because the odds are at a massive +5000, Uruguay is as good of an underdog pick to lift the trophy as any qualifying nation.

Why Uruguay will move to the next round

Suarez and Cavani are likely to make a World Cup appearance. But Uruguay is much more than just Suarez and Cavani. The two legendary players will help the cause, but the real star of Uruguay’s team is Real Madrid player Francisco Valverde.

Valverde is the reason the Uruguayans will move to the knockout stage. Uruguay will lean on Valverde to control the middle of the pitch. He should have success after spending so much time working with Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.

Why Uruguay won’t move to the next round

Valverde is a good player, and Cavani and Suarez can still play with the best in the world, but Uruguay won’t beat Portugal and win Group H. So if Uruguay won’t be Portugal, the Uruguayans must hope they can get past South Korea.

The South Koreans have a strong team this year. Not only that, but Uruguay may be too old to keep up with the much younger Koreans. Uruguay’s march to the knockout stage isn’t assured.

Final Analysis – Uruguay is one of the top two teams in Group H

South Korea does have a very good team, but Uruguay is much deeper. More importantly, Uruguay has shown they can lean on Suarez, Cavani, or one of the younger players.

In the 2-0 victory over Chile in late March that propelled Uruguay to the FIFA World Cup, Suarez scored the first goal. Valverde scored the second.

The victory was Uruguay’s fourth straight during WC qualifying. By the time the World Cup kicks off, Uruguay will be the second strongest squad in their group.

The South Koreans will pose an issue. But Uruguay is not only tough enough to knock the Koreans from the Cup, but the Uruguayans can upset Portugal and win Group H. Give Uruguay a big shot to move to the knockout stage.
