This will be a fun season for college football, which will be celebrating the 10th edition of the College Football Playoff. While the new system hasn’t necessarily been good for every program or conference, it has produced a more legitimate national champion than the bowl system was able to muster up for many years.
When it comes to Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and TCU, it is likely that at least one of the aforementioned programs should be in the conversation for the national championship. Alabama has appeared in six of the first nine championship games, while Georgia has been involved three times.
Here’s a look at what to expect from a strong group of programs form last season that have a chance to win the National Championship this year.
Can Georgia, TCU, Michigan, Ohio State or Alabama win the National Championship?
2023 College Football Playoff National Championship | 10th CFP National Championship
When: Monday, January 8, 2024
Where: NRG Stadium | Houston, Texas
TCU likely Won’t Win a National Championship
The TCU Horned Frogs stunned everyone by running the table in the regular season to win the Big 12 championship before falling to Kansas State in the conference title game. TCU lost its five-year quarterback Max Duggan to graduation and are considered extreme longshots to win the championship.
TCU is +10000 to bring home its first CFP title. Texas (+3000) and Oklahoma (+6000) both are more highly regarded than the Horned Frogs.
Georgia Aiming for Three-Peat, Alabama Looking for Footing
The Georgia Bulldogs are hoping they can be the first team in the CFP era to win three consecutive national championships. Georgia won’t have quarterback Stetson Bennett, but will be loaded with playmakers on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs (+230) would be the first program since Minnesota won three pre-poll era championships from 1934-36.
The Associated Press poll didn’t start until the 1936 season. For Alabama, the Crimson Tide only missed out on the playoffs for the second time last season. Alabama (+550) didn’t even win the SEC West, falling behind rival LSU. However, the Crimson Tide massacred Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl and will be looking to show their slide was a one-year mirage.
Alabama will have a new quarterback after Bryce Young’s graduation, but it is hard to imagine Nick Saban won’t have a plan in place to replace him.
Can We Trust the Big Ten?
Ohio State, to its credit, won the first-ever CFP title. However, since then he Buckeyes (+700) have failed to keep up with the SEC programs that it faces off in the postseason on a yearly basis. Ohio State will have a new quarterback this season and is hoping to knock Michigan down a peg.
The Michigan Wolverines (+1000) will return quarterback JJ McCarthy and have beat Ohio State the past two seasons. Michigan will need to keep up the momentum to get past the semifinals of the CFP, which Michigan has failed to do in its last two appearances.
Is it Time to Bet the Field?
There are programs on the rise outside of the group mentioned above. USC (+1400) will return Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams, but will need to improve on defense. Notre Dame (+3500) made a big splash in the transfer portal by bringing in experienced quarterback Sam Hartman from Wake Forest.
While there are plenty of strong contenders outside of the above-mentioned group, either Georgia or Alabama will have a lot to say about who wins.
