2022 Golden Globe Awards

  • When: Sunday, Jan. 9
  • Where: TBD
  • TV / Streaming: TBD

Best Actor – Drama

  • Will Smith (King Richard) -230
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) +270
  • Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of McBeth) +900
  • Mahershala Ali (Swan Song) +1200
  • Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos ) +1400

Will Smith provides a terrific performance in King Richard, the tennis  movie about sisters Serena and Venus Williams. Richard Williams is the sister’s father. He’s the reason both Venus and Serena dominated tennis for so many years.

But although Smith looks like a lock, Benedict Cumberbatch is the top play. Cumberbatch is fantastic in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. It’s the type of movie Globe voters will be all over.

The second pick is Mahershala Ali in Swan Song. The movie is about a terminally ill man in the near future who decides to clone himself to save his wife and son from grief. The concept is fantastic and Ali delivers a knockout performance.

Golden Globe Top Pick: Benedict Cumberbatch

Golden Globe Underdog Pick: Mahershala Ali

Best Actor – Musical / Comedy

  • Andrew Garfield (tick, tick . . . Boom!) -280
  • Peter Dinklage (Cyrano) +330
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Back) +1000
  • Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) +1200
  • Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) +1200

Garfield is a lock, right? Not so fast. Peter Dinklage does a great job playing a classic character in Cyrano. Globe voters know Dinklage from his Game of Thrones days.

Also, the odds on Garfield are too low. Sure, he should secure the Globe. But upsets happen and Dinklage’s odds imply he has a shot.

The second pick, and it’s not close, is Leo in Don’t Look Back. The Netflix film is absolutely brilliant and like what you might expect, DiCaprio is awesome. More importantly, Leo plays a normal dude in the movie. That should have impressed Globe voters.

Golden Globe Top Pick: Peter Dinklage

Golden Globe Underdog Pick: Leonardi DiCaprio

Best Actress – Drama

  • Kristen Stewart (Spencer) -200
  • Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +550
  • Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) +600
  • Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) +700
  • Lady Gaga (House of Gucci) +900

Kristen Stewart plays Lady Di in Spencer and you’d think the Globes would be all over Lady Di. Ah, but here’s the thing. The Golden Globes got into a lot of trouble for being non-diverse, which means Stewart could end up without a statue on Jan. 9.

The top pick is Olivia Colman in The Lost Daughter. The movie is a straight up Colman vehicle. It’s about a woman who heads to a beach and ends up confronting her dark past.

The second pick is Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Chastain plays one of the most controversial real-life figures of the 1980s. As always, she hits it out of the park.

Golden Globe Top Pick: Olivia Colman

Golden Globe Underdog Pick: Jessica Chastain

Best Actress – Musical / Comedy

  • Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) -130
  • Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) +110
  • Jennifer Lawrence (Don’t Look Up) +1000
  • Marion Cotillard (Annette) +2000
  • Emma Stone (Cruella) +2500

West Side Story bombed. So even though Rachel Zegler probably deserves to win the award, she won’t. Alana Haim is a decent replacement, but we’re swinging for the fences with both of our picks in this category.

Don’t Look Up might be the best film of the year. Jennifer Lawrence is terrific as Kate Dibiasky, the college grad student who discovers the Earth killing comet headed towards the planet along with DiCaprio’s character. Lawrence is perfect in the role.

Marion Cotillard plays opposite Adam Driver in the weirdly fantastic Annette. Cotillard is one of the world’s best thespians. In Annette, Cotillard plays an opera singer. She’s terrific and deserves consideration to take home the Globe.

Golden Globe Top Pick: Jennifer Lawrence

Golden Globe Underdog Pick: Marion Cotillard
