Dustin Johnson

There are a couple of reasons to like Johnson this weekend, starting with the fact that he is the #1 player in the world and also has a tour win under his belt this season. He is also the defending champion of the Genesis Open, and we all know how some players like certain courses and events. I don’t particularly like playing the chalk in any sport, but +400 is still good odds for a favorite. My money is going to be on Johnson to repeat as the champion this weekend.

Rory McIlroy

• Genesis Open Betting Odds: +1000

It has been a bit of a slow start to the season for McIlroy, which is not entirely surprising when you consider that he is still trying to work his way back from injuries that hampered his 2017 season. McIlroy failed to make the cut at Pebble Beach last week, but you feel that he is overdue for a big performance, which is why he might be a good top 5 pick this weekend.

Jordan Spieth

Like McIlroy, Spieth has failed to launch in the early part of the season, with an 18th place finish being the best he has had to offer to this point. He is another player that is too good to continue playing this poorly, but is this the weekend he wakes up? I’m not so sure that it is given how he has played in the early tournaments, and a top 10 finish may be the best that we can expect from Spieth.

Justin Thomas

Last season was a breakthrough year for Thomas, as he won 5 tournaments, including the first major of his career at the PGA Championship. 2018 looks to be heading in the same direction for Thomas, who has already picked up his first win of the season at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. If anyone is going to push Johnson to the limits over the course of the 4 days of this tournament, my money would be on Thomas.

Phil Mickelson

• Genesis Open Betting Odds: +1800

Mickelson may seem like a bit of an odd choice to be among the favorites, but let’s not forget that he has won this event on two previous occasions, although those wins did come a few years back. Mickelson tied for second at Pebble Beach last weekend, so perhaps he is ready to turn back the clock a little and get a win here. I would be surprised if that happened, though.
