Is Rory McIlroy worth backing odds? Which player among Matsuyama, Rose, or Schauffele has the best shot of beating McIlroy?
Let’s first establish whether Rory is a good bet at +600. Although the odds are low, backing McIlroy to win this week makes sense. He shot a 267, -13 at the ZOZO Championship last week. That was good enough for a third-place finish.
But, although Rory is in great form, he must contend with last year’s WGC-HSBC winner, Xander Schauffele. Schauffele shot a -14 at this tournament in 2018. He beat Tony Finau in a playoff. Schauffele actually shot the ball well at the ZOZO. He ended up tenth after a 68, 66, 65, 72, -9. He’s playing well enough to challenge Rory. Among the favorites, Xander’s the better play.
Which underdog golfer at +2200 to +3500 odds can win the WGC-HSBC?
At +2500, Tony Finau offers excellent odds. Finau played awful at the ZOZO Championship. He finished tied for fifty-ninth. We shouldn’t hold that against him because he tore it up at the 2018 WGC-HSBC, losing to Schauffele in a playoff. Finau has a real chance of winning this week. Because he played so badly at the ZOZO, his odds are overlaid to win in Shanghai.
What golfers at +4000 odds or higher have the best shot of winning the WGC-HSBC?
Francesco Molinari didn’t have a great 2018 WGC-HSBC tournament. He ended up tied for forty-third. Molinari did shoot a 69 final round last year, though. It could mean that he finally got it together on the last day. If Francesco can start out better, he’ll have a shot to pull off the big upset in the fourth round.
What PGA Tournament Matchups should golf handicappers consider at the WGC-HSBC?
- Paul Casey -125
- Tony Finau +105
Just based on Finau’s finish at the 2018 WGC-HSBC, he deserves backing over Paul Casey. Finau is a good golfer. He blew it at the ZOZO Championship. He can make amends in China.
- Rory McIlroy -190
- Justin Rose +165
McIlroy played great at the ZOZO when finishing third. Rose played great in this last year. He finished in third place with a -10. Only 4 strokes off Finau and Schauffele in 2018, Rose feels he can win this week. Back Rose over Rory.
- Xander Schauffele -130
- Tony Finau +110
Schauffele’s recent form is much better than Finau’s. However, in this matchup, the odds are way underlaid on Schauffele. Back Finau.
