Just under a month later, Always Dreaming was back at it again as he won the Xpressbet Florida Derby on April 1 to head into the Kentucky Derby with a spotless 3-0 record. Now, after blowing away the field over the second half of the most prestigious horse race in North America, Always Dreaming heads into the 2017 Preakness Stakes as the horse to beat.
Hall of Fame Jockey John R. Velázquez will be aboard Always Dreaming takes to the track at Pimlico and that doesn’t look like a good thing – for the rest of the field seeing as how the two-time Eclipse award winner (2004 and 2005) has gone 69-34-39 in 291 races this year alone.
“I’m just very, very pleased with the way he’s come out of the Derby and the way he looks at Pimlico,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He seems to be proud of himself and doing well.”
With 10 of the last 20 Kentucky Derby winners also winning the Preakness, Always Dreaming will have a good shot despite the short turnaround between the first two Triple Crown races.
“It is a quick turnaround, and sometimes you don’t know how horses are going to respond to that until you get into the stretch of the race, and that’s really when you find out what they have left in reserve,” Pletcher said. “But we like what we’re seeing so far.”
After posting a perfect 4-0 record this year, most everyone likes what they’re seeing out of Always Dreaming.
