Bets Offered on the 2019 Belmont Stakes
The Belmont is Race 11 on the card. Two races happen after the Belmont, which means bettors can play a pick 3 that involves the Belmont Stakes. The pick 4 that includes the Belmont Stakes starts in Race 8.
Win, Place, Show – Win, place, show betting are called straight wagers in horse racing. Place means second while show means third. If you like Tacitus, the 9/5 morning line favorite to win, you’d simply bet on him to win.
If you wager on a horse to place and the horse wins, you win the place money. If you wager on a horse to show, the horse can win, finish second, or finish third. You only win the show money, the third place money, if the horse wins.
Exacta – An exacta is a wager where you pick the first place and second place horses in exact order. You can box an exacta. Let’s say you like Tacitus to win and War of Will to finish second. You box Tacitus and War of Will for $2. Your exacta box would cost $4 since it’s two bets for $2 each. In this exacta box, Tacitus or War of Will could win with the other horse finishing second.
Trifecta – A trifecta involves picking the winner, place horse, and show horse, first, second, and third, in order. It makes sense to use a key horse. For example, you could key Tacitus to win over War of Will and Intrepid Heart to finish second over 3 or 4 horses to finish third. By doing so, you can cut how much you wager on the trifecta.
Superfecta – You absolutely must use a key horse when playing the superfecta. A $1 superfecta that boxes 5 horses costs $120. A superfecta like this in the Belmont Stakes would only include half the field. Superfectas are tough to hit. Make sure to find the key horse to finish first, second, or third.
Daily Double – On Belmont Stakes Day, you can play a daily double that includes Race 10, the Grade 1 Manhattan, to the Belmont Stakes, Race 11. Or, you could play a double with the Belmont, Race 11, to Race 12, a $62,000 allowance optional claimer.
Pick 3 – Horseplayers can wager on a couple of pick 3’s that include the Belmont Stakes. They can play a pick 3 from Race 9, the Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap, to Race 10, the Manhattan, to Race 11, the Belmont Stakes.
Or, they could play a pick 3 that starts in Race 11: the Belmont Stakes, the allowance event in Race 12, and the Woodford Reserve Brooklyn Invitational in Race 13.
Pick 4 – The pick 4 includes the Belmont Stakes starts in Race 8:
- Race 8 – The Woody Stephens
- Race 9 – The Runhappy Metropolitan
- Race 10 -The Manhattan
- Race 11 – The Belmont Stakes
You should look for at least 1 key horse if you decide to play the pick 4. If you find a couple of key horses, one in two races in the pick 4, you could spread in the other two legs. Hitting a pick 4 is difficult, but the payout could be tremendous.
