Top Strategies to Wager on the Belmont Stakes

Strategy #1: Key Around Tacitus or War of Will

Tacitus is the 9/5 favorite. War of Will is the 2/1 second choice. A popular strategy in any horse race, not just the Belmont Stakes, is to key around either the first or second choice. In this case, the strategy could be even more important to make winning Belmont Stakes wagers because Tacitus and War of Will are the two most accomplished horses in the field.

Strategy #2: Drop War of Will or Tacitus from Your Wagers

A counter strategy to the first on this list is to drop Tacitus and War of Will from all your wagers. Although this is much riskier than Strategy #1, it could lead to major profit. Not only that, there are knocks against both favorites.

Tacitus had a brutal trip in the Kentucky Derby. Although he looks more than ready to show his best on Saturday, jockey Jose Ortiz will have to make a key decision early on in the race. Should Jose put him near the lead? Or, should Jose keep him far behind the pace? The problem is that either decision could work out, which makes Ortiz’s job very difficult.

War of Will runs close to the pace. However, this will be his third race in the span of 5 weeks. No horse is used to running three races at three different tracks at three different distances in the span of 5 weeks.

Strategy #3: Choose an Above +1000 Choice and Build Wagers Around that Horse

There are plenty of quality horses offering +1000 or higher odds on the morning line. Intrepid Heart, Sir Winston, and Tax all offer great odds on the morning line. A case can be made for any one of those horses to win the Belmont on June 8.

Strategy #4: Build Around the Top Speed Horse in the Race

There doesn’t appear to be a lot of speed in the 2019 Belmont Stakes. That means a horse like Spinoff could take the lead and keep on going. Spinoff is +1500 on the morning line. If jockey Javier Castellano puts him on the lead and he gets away with easy fractions, who knows?

War of Will is another candidate to stick close to the pace and then take off. He too could be very difficult to catch if he takes the lead early over Spinoff and then runs off.

Strategy #5: Build Around the Top Closer in the Race

The top closer on paper is favored Tacitus. However, Sir Winston, Master Fencer, and Everfast could all qualify in the Belmont. Sir Winston, especially, looks formidable here. He ran a bang up Peter Pan chasing loose on the lead Global Campaign to finish second. He should have no trouble getting the distance and Joel Rosario is a great jockey.

If you wish to employ this strategy, consider Sir Winston as your key horse. The Mark Casse trainee should out run his +1200 morning line odds.
